Hey guys,
I am on hold at SUNY post interview. Is anyone else in this situation or know what the process is from here? Is this a waitlist or a good sign/bad sign? What? I woudl contact the admissions office but my letter said to please not bug our office with phone calls until they contact you, in so many words.

yeah, I got the same response from Downstate post-interview. I have yet to interpert exactly what all this means. Anyone else in the same position or have any ideas ...info would be appreciated!
thanks.

I'm not sure which SUNY you're talking about, but I was originally put on hold post-interview at Downstate. I didn't contact them or send them anything, but I was accepted about two months later.

Yes, I am talking about Downstate. When were you put on hold?

md2007 gal,
u gonna be attending downstate this fall?

Congrats on your acceptance MD-2007-Gal. Do you have anymore information on that Downstate hold? Thanks very much.

For anyone who wants to know:
I interviewed at Downstate in early October. I found out I was put on hold 4-6 weeks later (don't remember exactly when). Around mid-February, I got an acceptance letter. I didn't contact them at all during that time, nor did I send them a transcript with my first semester grades. They never contacted me during that time in between either.
I'm probably not going to Downstate next year, actually. They have great clinical training, but I was accepted to my first choice school (NYU). I'm just waiting to go to Second Looks and see financial aid packages.

Anyone have any updates on this topic. Thanks so much !

I interviewed 5 weeks ago, I'm hoping to at least hear I've joined you guys in the hold-post interview/accepted group. From what I hear, Downstate has decent odds at acceptances off the wait list. Wish me luck!

Any further information on whether Hold= Waitlist at Downstate?

Is there still room for optimism if one finds oneself still 🙁 on HOLD at the end of April?

I had heard about a high priority WL at Downstate and that sounds totally different from HOLD.

Does Downstate have much WL movt? When? How bout HOLD movt?

Sighhhh.

Any info would be appreciated, especially since they keep advising not to call them.

Sorry, I still haven't heard a peep from them since they put me on "hold" back in January. Anybody else have new information ? thanks so much!

My brother got put on the High Priority Waitlist, which sounds different from the Hold list. I'm not sure but you should find out. They sent him a bunch of financial aid info for him to fill out when he got his waitlist letter. I believe they take the HP list ppl first. He talked to ppl that went to that school and they said that ppl on the HP list are very likely to get in. I think right now they are waiting for the May 15 move. Well, hope this helps you guys and good luck

oh, at Downstate just in case you wanted to know

Thank you for responding. I'm getting the impression Downstate is pretty filled up already.

Alright,
I know I am not supposed to contact anyone while I am on "Hold" but now that
May 15th has passed I am wondering if I should follow instructions and shut my trap or call up and gind out what the deal is. Does anyone have insight?

Hey Phsyics MD.

Here is what Bridgie found out when she called and a link to the other post Does Downstate have a pulse?

I have news!!! Oh my god! So I called to make sure I was on the waitlist since I have recieved no form from them like I have from all my other waitlist schools. And they transfer me to this man who spilled the beans. For those on hold here is the deal: they are scheduling the next review at the end of this month. At that meeting they will decide who will be offered a place on the waitlist. So, in fact, we are still on hold post May 15th and will continue to be on hold until the first week of June or somewhere around there. Then we can all recieve a rejection, acceptance or a form to offer us a place on the waitlist.

So basically you should call and find out if you were put on the waitlist.

I was wondering if any one has access to the MSAR for 2003 or 2004. I am out of state and I was wondering how many out of staters end up attending. I think I read before that there was only like 11 or something very small... Any help would be appreciated.

Also ,,, The Koman if you read this please post.. When your brother heard that many of the HP list people got in does that mean they usually exhaust it???

Penguin Poptart -

Downstate may seem filled up, but I am betting there will be alot of movement, after other waitlists start moving - i think lots of people, esp. in state residents, are holding onto their acceptance there but are really hoping for a different school. when those lists get going, so will downstate's.

btw, I'm not insulting downstate - i'm going there - but it does seem that most people have other first choices.

Hey Gluon,
Thanks for the info. I haven't recevied a word from Downstate so I assume I am still on hold, but I will call anyways. I assume then that for whomever is on hold, it would be highly unlikely to get an acceptance straight out after being re-reviewed. Why wouldn't they just offer acceptances to those on their high priority waitlist and offer the rest of us on "hold" waitlist positions at best? What a strange process! I sent them an email today asking if as an "on hold" candidate I could send a letter of intent, I know we aren't supposed to send anything but this just seems ridiculous. I do know that the waitlist is not ranked, and regarding the out of state stats, I asked during my interview if out of staters were treated differently, especially since Downstate took about 2 last year. But my interviewer said that this year the admissions committee was encouraged to accept a lot more out of staters so that gives me hope. Who knows, perhaps it will even work to our advantage! When I interviewed (in Feb), there was no one there from out of state except for me. Only time shall tell. Can I just say again, that THE WAITLIST PROCESS SUCKS!!!!! I am just venting here, but I can't plan anything for the summer, including work (and I really need $$$), because I have to block off the middle of July to the beginning of Sept JUST FOR THE CHANCE I MIGHT GET OFF A WAITLIST!!!!

Where would you guys prefer to go other than Downstate?? An out of state school? I'm thinking there will be movement on the waitlist too. I guess we have to wait until June to find out.

Yeah Physics MD, I hear ya....

I would definitely send them a letter of intent or interest and update your file! I dont even remember them saying not to send anything in? I just remember the dont call, and I call anyway. I think they are very busy but I always just ask if they recieved something I sent them recently... which gives you reason to Definitely send in stuff!! Everything is in your file and you can check for emails and other stuff. I think if you have any questions about the something you email to [email protected]

Especially since the list is unranked! (news to me!) Also that rocks about the out of state stuff.. I know " he said rocks???" YEah it is definitely very good!!

Also when I interviewed I asked about sending stuff/i.e. grades in and she said it would be fine. 🙂

Aug 2002 - AMCAS and MCAT completed
Sept 2002 - Secondary completed
Jan 2003 - interview notice via e-mail
Feb 2003 - interview
March 2003 - high priority alternate list via snail mail
May 2003 - admission via snail mail

The high priority alternate list really does exist. It comes along with health forms, financial aid forms, a request for official transcripts, and a notice to take the American Heart Association CPR certification. The letter specifically states that "MOST" people are eventually accepted off of the high priority alternate list during the spring and summer months. It also states that preference for the people on this list are given to those who submit all official transcripts and also "clear" themselves with the Student Health Service (a very arduous task in which you need to complete all the immunization forms, as well as visit your doctor for a physical and a bunch of lab tests). If you're born outside the U.S. like I am, then you need to actually get a 2nd TB test done at the Student Health Service at Downstate in order to get "cleared". I made two 7-hour roundtrip drives to Brooklyn to get this done: one day to get the TB shot, and another day to get it read. Why? So that I could get "cleared" by the Student Health Service and thereby get preference in admissions off of the high priority alternate list. I was accepted ten days later. I don't know if my efforts helped any in the admissions decision, but I wasn't going to take any chances. You really have to want it.

As for those of you that were put on hold, waitlist, hold changed to waitlist/alternate......if your letter doesn't specifically say "high priority alternate list", then you're not on it. Of course, I don't know if they are still adding to the h.p.a. list or not. Could be that the list was made early in the spring as a one-time thing. Once that list is exhausted, Downstate would probably then go to the normal waitlist/alternate list. In the end, I hear from current students at Downstate that the turnover rate is extremely high and that many, many people eventually decide to go to other schools. Good news for anybody waiting for admission, doesn't matter what list you are on!
