Got a wonderful email yesterday informing me that I will be paying 10% more for my state school education for the year starting Fall 2011. Thanks Cuomo. And by the way, your drunken girlfriend can come by any time to take care of that cirrhosis.

wtf?

Welcome to state school
Obligatory violin here: +pity+

what you gonna do? drop out?

well, that's the point isn't it? They know no one is going to drop out, especially when they increase tuition two weeks before classes start. This is a s***** move by the state of new york to milk more money out of students.

And you were sooo excited about going to Downstate weren't you?

I heard you were paying 10% though.

Dude SUNY is like half tuition compared to the other private medical schools in new york. Why are you so mad about the 10 % increase? Heck that's still nothing compared to other tuitions.

The point is not that the tuition increase is insignificant, which in the long run it is, but the fact that they announce the tuition hike comes literally two weeks before classes start. It comes after people have already chosen and committed to a school. To me, that's just irresponsible and a slap in the face of students. And Mr. Bird, the tuition increase is not a reflection of the school itself, but rather the SUNY board. I'm still very fortunate to be attending a school that I really feel comfortable at.

You gotta be more passionate about it.

The OP will be a terrible doctor because he's/she's more concerned about fundamental fairness and personal debt, instead of being enamoured with the fact that he's/she's going to be a doctor. He/she really should feel honored that he/she got in, while others didn't, in spite of the fact that it's a merit based system.

Also, elphaba would have been an excellent doctor, as evidenced by his/her willingness to cut off a finger for the chance of paying higher tuition.

Oh, if only medical schools paid attention to things like this, and didn't insist on stupid things like a high GPA and good test scores!

lol.

i'm a fan of rehashed threads about people having it bad that don't actually have it as bad as the people who made the original threads

(nothing personal meant fireitup, you've been a nice guy in what limited interaction i've had with you)

np man. im not trying to be whiney; it's not all about the money. i just find it kind of dick to send people COA estimates and give loans based on that, and then come two weeks before classes and say "oh, btw we upped your tuition".

Actually, tuition increases were already on the website as of early July. There was a discussion about it in the Downstate Class of 2015 group on Facebook. It is ridiculous though that despite that posted increase, Admissions and Financial Aid didn't email us about it til about a whole month later.

I blame it on gas prices :/

Anyone that's done their research on this should know that the SUNYs will have continued tuition hikes over the coming years. They're still much cheaper than private schools, so I doubt anyone is changing where to go based on these hikes. Though in 5-10 years that might change.

Of course, it's expected. But my main issue is that they inform you that you'll be paying 10% more after they've done the COA and you've sent in your loan forms.

@Asyouwereatrio: I (incorrectly) assumed that this tuition increase would be for the following year because I thought it would be ridiculous (and unethical) to up the tuition so close to classes starting.
