SUNY Schools and me?

hey everyone,

i know some of you find these types of posts annoying, but i'm kind of lost and would like some insight. i'm really focused on the SUNY schools because i feel as though these are my best chances for acceptance, plus the tuition is extremely reasonable... but i haven't heard a thing from any but Upstate where i'm on HOLD.

so with my stats below, what do you guys think? i know you can only tell me so much, but still, let me know if your in a similar situation or know something or whatever. THANKS.

bio sci major at GWU with a 3.48 cum/3.43 sci
spent my freshman year at community college 4.0/4.0, took Bio 1,2 and G Chem 1,2
overall i'm 3.67 cum/3.50 sci
ECs: work exp as a lab assistant (about 2 years)
NREMT-B certification, though no real experience
AMCAS submitted in august

Do you have hospital volunteer work? Or any more ECs? That EMT license is not going to impress anyone, especially since you have little experience with it. Your MCAT score and GPA are fine, but still below median, so when you get your interview, prepare to blow them away. I think you have a chance; just don't stop believing, don't let your GPA slip, don't stop volunteering or participating in clubs etc. because on your interview you can at least show them how you are still hard at work and all.

hey thanks for responding. i agree, the EMT cert isn't a big deal but i guess it's just a decent EC to add to the app. i should also add that i've graduated already, and now i'm working as a tutor and also taking some classes. i applied for the nyc teaching fellowship next year so if i don't get in anywhere i think that'll be a good EC to add. but thanks again for the advice.

My numbers are somewhat similar to yours. I have a 30 on the MCat and a 3.7 GPA (3.6 science) with EMT certification in Israel that i used for a month working on ambulance. My question for you is why did you bother getting certification if you never used it. There are few better experiences that show a desire to help others in the medical field better than EMT. When i go on interviews my experiences as an EMT are my main talking point. You should really consider using your year off to use your EMT certification in some capacity. Teaching is nice but probally not as good as a clinical experience or research.

Btw it is probaly worthwhile to apply to schools like albany, nymed, drexel, and penn state with your numbers ( if you already havent).

i guess the consenus thus far is that i need more clinical exposure... i also applied to NYMC, but not the others from your list. i think it's too late to be sending out apps now, but i'll definitely keep those school in mind should i have another go around.

3.65/31Q research, fellowship, volunteer, shadow. nothing crazy, but SUNY is not liking me. i got HOLD from upstate, but nothing from buffalo or downstate yet. i didn't even bother with stony brook.

hey guys/girls
NY state resident here as well. Been complete at Buffalo since 10/31, downstate since 11/02 and upstate just since 11/20 (though not my own fault, they didn't send me the secondary right away and I had to contact to get it). Anyways, have heard NOTHING from any of them. Did not apply to Stony. I did my UG and in grad school now at Buffalo, so I definately would like to hear from them first (only if its good though🙂 ) this wait is killing me and I cannot focus on school bc of it.
Let me know when you all hear something. Perhaps future classmates🙂

I would not be concerned about some of the suny's taking so long to get back to you with an interview. All the sunys, i received interviews at, took atleast a month from when I was complete to grant me an interview. This is a slow tedious process that sometimes is completely illogical. For example, i received an interview at ny med four months after I was complete...go figure.

Well, ive been complete for much longer then a month, about 6-7 weeks at each of them. So i am getting worried. But I was an august MCATER and was complete in the "rush" period. So I hope tomorrow....I have decent stats so Im at a loss (32R 3.55 Overall GPA, decent Ec's)

its been exactly five weeks complete tomorrow at Buffalo which is my home school!!! I am getting worried bc winter break starts soon right? So I hope I hear something (good) before break.
As for me, I have an BS in nursing, and am finishing my MS in biochemistry concentration right now. I have a bunch of ECs, I was a cheerleader in college, sorority, CNA, medical assistant, etc...and lots of research from UG and grad school. I really want to hear from my home schoollllllll. and of course the others would be nice.

Just got an interview invite to Upstate today; they're scheduling for March. It took about 2-3 weeks for an invite to Downstate, 1 month for an invite to Stony Brook, and over 2 months for an invite to Buffalo. I had to resend my LORs to Upstate three weeks ago because they lost them.

Overall GPA not great 3.4...messed up earlier in my academic career...but at current school it is 3.75 with all the pre-med requirements taken in the last 2 years. 2 years volunteering ER and Lab.

Completed secondary's in October-1st week of November

So today...I was in class and I got this phone call from "UNKNOWN" and I thought it was my friend calling from his work. Turned out the lady from SUNY Upstate called me for an interview invite..


My first invite. The weird thing is that the earliest date is in MARCH. Is that even possible? Maybe its because I'm OOS????


Anyway, my stats aren't impressive either... 29R with 3.79 GPA. They must have saw past that. Good luck to all of you. I hope you get interviews!

my stats is just average and I got an interview at SUNY Buffalo (my 10th interview and 1 acceptance already). Californian, 3.85 GPA, 28M MCAT (10PS 8V 10BS). I would never think I could get that many interviews with my stats. so yeah, you guys here seem to have better stats than I do so dont give up hopes. good luck guys.

I was "complete" at Upstate around Nov. 8; my status page said I'd been complete since Sep. 21 (when I sent my first batch of LORs) but then I got a letter from Upstate saying they didn't have them, so I resent. THEN when I called the admissions office, two minutes after I resent my letters to tell them, they said they already had my LORs. Really disorganized.

Has anyone gotten accepted/rejected post interview from Downstate yet? It's been about 5 weeks since my interview.

Which SUNY do you think is the best?

Stony Brook is the most well known because of its undergrad reputation and research funding at its med school.However the four SUNY schools are very comparable in terms of the quality of residency matching,hospitals etc.
They are very different in terms of geography,rural vs urban vs suburbs.so personal preference on these issues would count for more in choosing between them.

Its funny bc I was at the health science library wed at UB and there were some med school interviewies there all cute and dressed up with nametags on. I'm like, thats going to be me🙂

I received a pre-interview hold pending fall grades on 10/23 via snail mail. Also an August MCATer, but I'm out of state so I'm sure that was a quick strike against me (in addition to any others).
