Does anyone have an idea about the timeline for priority waitlist people is? Could it be before May 15th? or realistically is it going to go into June.

Yes, I know...🙂 I interviewed there last week and the Director of Admissions said that it was *possible* that some of us would be reviewed by the committee as early as this week... man it would be SWEET to hear something (good) from them so soon!!!

i hope to hear from upstate soon too. it's definitely been over 4 weeks since i've heard from them and the status page hasn't changed at all.

does anyone know how often they update your status?

(btw..one of the ladies told me that they review applicants every wednesday. good luck to everyone who's still waiting/interviewing...)

Hi tunahater, I think there were a lot of people who came off of the HPA list last year (according to the Dean when I interviewed)...and people got off of the list right up until orientation day!! So, there's lots of hope! :luck:

When did you interview?? (I'm still waiting to hear something and I am wondering if I will still have to wait a lot longer...) thanks. 🙂
 
Well that's good to hear. Um, I think my interview date was around 2/28? When I was there, they told me at that point they had about a 3 week turnaround. Hope that helps. 🙂
 
I interviewed there in Feb and was placed on the HPA list. I was told this is pretty much an acceptance unless you interviewed really late like at the end of March/April. But anytime before that, its pretty much an acceptance. Then again, I could be wrong. I am going on what I have been told. When I interviewed, Isabelle Rhoades said that if there is a place you want to be, its the HPA list because thats a list that they ALWAYS get to. If you are on the other waitlist-the Hold by Committee list, she said that it may be wise to start looking to re-apply or try to get into another med school because Upstate has never gotten to that list in over 4 years. With that said, every year is different and this year my be like 2001 or 2002 where Upstate has exhausted the HPA list and got to the regular waitlist to offer a couple of acceptances. Ultimately, it is God that is in control, so sit tight and try your best to relax.

I am here waiting to see if I got into Upstate I interviewed February 25th and my status page just changed last Friday.

i got an email for the HPA, but i think they might send something in the mail afterwards (if they did, i havent received anything from them yet)

Hey Rootsman, you get an email if you were placed on the HPA list and then you will receive the letter via US post. If you havent gotten the email and your status page has changed that may mean that you were placed on the other waitlist or was regretfully denied. If you were accepted, you would have received a phone call from Jennifer Welch. Just remember that God is always in control no matter what. Take care

I interviewed there the same day, status changed sometime last week, and I still haven't received anything :-/
 
Just to let the last two posters know, when your status change w/o you hearing about it, it is almost always a waitlist/rejection from Upstate. Sorry to be less than optimistic but thats what happens with them. (did for me too)

and by last posters I meant several above. My internet didn't load the whole page (stupid dominican republic <15.6kbs internet)

Hey bcntequiero, I am not sure about your question. I know for CERTAIN that if your status changed and you did not receive an email or phone call, it is a rejection or a LOW Priority Waitlist not an HIGH priority waitlist! As for whether a decision was made without the status page changing, I am not sure. Since you interviewed March 1, they will get to you this week because I interviewed on Feb 25, so they will get to your file, Lord willing, by this Wed and if you are accepted, you will get a call by Friday of this week, If you were Placed on HPA, you will receive an email. If none, you have been rejected. Think good thoughts bcntequiero..okay.

Thanks BlackPower2012, I got some thinking to do about my future and what my next move is. God is in control but sometimes I just wish I knew what the plan was.
 
well those are some optimistic thoughts up there about the HP list. does anybody know whether it helped anyone in the past to write a letter of interest after being placed on the hp list? anyone planning on writing one?
 
Well, I dont think the letter will help your standing on the list. Its nice, but at the end of the day if you are ranked, lets say #78 on the list, I REALLY DOUBT that the letter will bump you from # 78 to #65 or something like that. At the end of the day, we just have to wait.

Everyone I know if that got HPA was notified via snail mail. I got my phone call acceptance on Monday of the following week, and sometimes it takes a little longer, though almost always within a week of the decision.

Also, I think in this case it is safe to say that it is out of God's hands, if it ever was in them. You should be praying to Jennifer Welch now...
 
Hey bigredder, I think its very irresponsible of you to assume that everyone believes in the same mental nonsense that you prescribe to. If Rootsman believes that God is in conrol, which HE IS, and will ALWAYS be, I think it's not your place to put your silly two-sense and say that he should be praying to Jennifer Welch.

First of all, if you become a doctor, and you patient is dying and believes that his/her god will save him/her, are you gonna say the same garbage you just said earlier? Or should you be sensitive to this person, although you dont believe in that kind of stuff?

We should be thankful for our acceptances and not resort to the childish antics of belittling one another based on our own "achievements". If Rootsman wants to believe that his god is in control and that brings him comfort, you have no place to say otherwise. If you want to give him a word of encouragement, thats great, anything else that denegrates his faith should be relegated to the conversations of you and your foolish scientific cohorts. God was, is , and will always be in control, whether you or the scientific community believes it is irrespective of what is true!

Rootsman, God is always in control. I dont have all the answers, but just know that what he has thought, so shall it come to pass, and what he has purposed, so shall it stand. (Is 14:24).
 
I'm not belittling at all. Most monotheistic religions believe in free will, and this case that refers to the admissions committees. I think it is fair to say that faith in God can help you succeed in school, on the MCAT, and in your general character, but once you have had your interview it is irresponsible to assume that it is in God's hands. If we are predestined, why bother with all the crap we go through to impress admissions officers?

On your other point: comparing decisions of admissions committees with recovery from disease is such a stretch and so irrelevant that I'm not going to bother addressing it.

let him do his thing, you do yours. different strokes for different folks people... and if each of you ends up getting that acceptance you want, congratulations to all.

To everyone else on HPA, send the admissions committee an email asking if you have a shot of an acceptance. They told me that last year they got WAY past my spot so I just have to sit tight,relax, and stay positive.

For those of you that have multiple acceptances, Congrats!
For those of you that were regretfully denied, I hope it works out at another school, remember certain things may tip in your favor at another school other than Upstate/Downstate/UB!

I honestly didn't mean to offend, if I did so I apologize. I certainly wasn't referring at all to Rootsman. I'm not quite sure what Rootsman believes, and unless you know him better than I do, neither did you until he half-agreed with your assertions of God's omnipotence. It should be mentioned that telling a non-religious person that God is in control is at least as offensive to their beliefs as telling a religious person that he isn't, which as I noted before I didn't, so you should be more careful in the future.

You went on to assault my beliefs, calling them "mental nonsense", in spite of the fact that you know NOTHING about me or my beliefs. For someone who is apparently going into medicine, you seem dangerously anti-science, and that is both ironic and offensive. Please "relegate" your theological views and inflammatory rhetoric to conversations with your religious leaders and friends. The SUNY Upstate thread is certainly no place for them. Thank you.

I just find it very disheartening that all of these scientists takes it upon themselves to say that there is No God or that he is certainly not responsible for anything that happens, which eventhough you didnt state, it felt as though you were most certainly implying it. If that was not your intent, then I apologize.

It is in MY experience, at least in my formal education, that EVERY science professor that I had, took it upon themselves during lecture to state that there is No God and that a human with half a brain could design the human body and everything on this earth better than God did, and because we are so screwed up, physiologically there must be something else that must account for creation. Thats offensive! That may not have been the case in your education, but it was in mine and its sad because the whole entire PREMISE of science is to not PROVE or DISPROVE, but rather show Evidence that may SUPPORT or REFUTE any possible hypotheses. Having said that, there is currently, as we stand today, NO possible test to prove or disprove the very existence of God because there is no possible experiment. Because of this, scientists alike should not take it upon themselves to automaticaly reject the existence of a God! At best, they can only be agnostics and not athiests (because you cannot prove, as a matter of fact, scientifically that God does not exist-you would not be doing science)! I am not saying you are either, I am trying to make a point.

Listen folks I am just on here because it is a dream of mine to become a Doctor, and there is a lot of great information here. I appreciate all the information that has been shared with me about Medical School.

When I commented on God it was just because God was previously mentioned and right now it is a hard thing for me to wait and trust. It doesn't look like I am getting into Medical School this year, and up to this point Upstate has been my only interview so it meant a whole lot to me. I will be 30 this year so unlike some of you who have time to sit and argue I have a lot of serious decisions to make. Like should I drop my dream and if so what do I do.

So any information about Medical School is greatly appreciated. Please lets get this thread back on track.
 
Well, apparently this is off-topic right now, but I think someone earlier asked how people found out they were on hpa list. I found out via email. Hope that was helpful.

Before I discuss anything pertaining to medicine and this wacky application cycle, I wanted to just get back to the point of this forum and that is to encourage all those who aspire to be physicians. I saw a comment from Bigredder that I found to be offensive although he REALLY didnt mean it that way and I thought that he was being very sarcastic, but the statements that were said should only have been between myself and bigredder.

As for Rootsman,

I understand how you feel man. Trust me. I applied to 11 schools last year and I was told by one that I will probably be interviewed for a position sometime in March/April. I ended up calling at the end of April and they told me that the interview season was finished and that I was rejected-point blank. I was so sad and discouraged, and I actually thought about not going into medicine, but I could not SEE myself doing ANYTHING else and I had no desire to do anything else. I was making realy good money as a financial analyst, but honestly, what is money if you are not happy waking up in the morning to go to work? Thats how I felt, and I just quit my job and decided to take the entire summer to study for the MCATs again.

Its very hard to get back up and dust yourself off to re-do this process, but if this is your dream, which form what you stated, it is, try your best to do whatever it takes to gain admissions. I am not sure how your finances are, but if you feel like you cant wait until next year, have you thought about the Carribean? I know a lot of great people who went down there and they tell me good things about it.

I hope that this conversation is all in vain and that you get a call this week from Upstate telling you that you got an acceptance, because at the end of the day, there is still hope since you did not get the official letter. As Bigredder stated earlier, his status page changed a week before he was called for an acceptance and that may be the case for you! Dont lose hope man, for hope is what helps us get through the tough and rainy nights which can lead to sunlight in the morning!

Whatever you do, dont ever doubt your abilities because I am sure, since you got an interview, that you are well qualified to become a physician!
 
Just a follow-up - I recieved the official rejection letter today :-/ Still waiting on other schools though, so we'll see....
 
During my interview Jennifer Welch was very reassuring. She was saying that people on the HPA list really, really have a good chance of getting in. And it's a ranked waitlist, so she said you can even call and ask what your general chances are as compared to last year. She also said explicitly that the admissions office won't tell you your rank, but at least you'll know what your chances are.

The MA program is a one-year, coursework only program designed to help students with a Bachelor’s degree (who are already good candidates for a professional school) improve their academic foundation in the biomedical sciences and augment their credentials for admission into a professional program (i.e. medical, dental, podiatry, pharmacy school, or other health professional program). I understand that you are currently applying to medical schools for the fall 2008 academic year. If you have not received an acceptance yet, I would like to introduce you to a new program at Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCoM) to help you gain admittance to medical school. Established in 2003, Drexel Pathway to Medical School (DPMS) is an Early Assurance program specifically created for minority and/or disadvantaged students. Applicants must meet specific socioeconomic and academic criteria (2.9+ Science GPA and minimum MCAT score of 20 with no section less than 6) to be eligible for application to this program. Those with existing MCAT scores of a 7 VR, 8 PS, and 8 BS or better, will not have to retake the MCAT and will be evaluated for a modified curriculum. However, persons with MCAT scores less than a cumulative 20 and with any section scoring below a 6 generally do not meet the criteria necessary for this program.

Selected applicants will be offered an interview by the DUCOM admissions committee. After an interview, provisional acceptances may be offered to the students with the requirement that they attend and successfully complete the one year DPMS program prior to matriculating into DUCOM.

Students accepted into the DPMS program are required to achieve a minimum 3.0 GPA and retake and improve existing MCAT scores, during the program year, to a minimum of 7 in verbal reasoning and 8’s in both science sections, biological and physical. The program curriculum includes graduate and medical school level courses in the basic sciences as well as an MCAT preparatory course. Upon successful completion of the DPMS program and recommendation from the Medical Science Programs, students retain their acceptance and are permitted to matriculate into DUCOM.

DPMS program students receive academic tutoring and both personal and academic counseling during the program year which they will continue to receive as the students transition into the College of Medicine.

The Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Professional Education programs within Drexel University College of Medicine offer a few special master’s and enhancement post-baccalaureate type programs geared to help strengthen the credentials of medical school applicants. There are some other great postbac/masters porgrams such as the GEMS program and Georgetown and the PREP program at Mount Sinai Med School in New York the link to the Mt. Sinai program is:

I really hope that none of you will need these programs, but in the event that you do not gain admissions to med school this yaer, there ARE programs out there that may help some to gain admissions sometime in the future.

Since you interviewed before me, considering they rank people based on the time of interview-but dont qoute me on that because there are MANY conflicting data on these posts, you should be ahead of me (if you interviewed before Feb) so you should jut sit tight and wait. You can email them, but they will give you just a rough esitmate, for they will NOT tell your ranking.

Thanks BlackPower2012! Did you write them a letter of interest by any chance?
 
Bunface, read my last comment a few posts above. I didnt write a letter of intent because its my personal opinion that the letter will really not have much bearing on your ranking. If you want to write a letter, maybe you should go ahead. I may eventually write a letter sometime in the future, but I dont know. But if you feel like you want to, maybe you should and I may follow suit!lol.
