hey guys,
So I called Carolyn Couch and found that I got a spot at Binghamton. However, I think I will pass it on because now I have decided to go on to another school!! So good luck you guys!
Congratulations flyingblue! Wish you the best in your medical education and future career, and thank you for letting us know.

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of movement for Upstate yet...Aren't they usually known for a great deal of waitlist movement???

I spoke to Carolyn Couch yesterday, she said so far there has only been movement for the Binghamton campus. So, if you put down that you only want syracuse(like the idiot that i am) then they wont call you for those openings...

Hey guys,

I just called and I don't know if this will make anyone feel better but I was told they have not made the bulk of their calls yet. At first basically she implied they havent called anyone and said well we have called some, but it sounds like the list is yet to start really moving. Hope this helps!!! 🙂 Good luck to all!

Didn't you hear?

It already started moving.
Just like we already won the Iraq war....

That is great news!!! 🙂

I meant.... when will the "Bulk of their calls" begin to take place?

She didn't tell me but really seemed to stress that they hadn't really begun to make calls yet. Made me feel a lot better about things. Also asked my name and told me my spot on the list has always been reached so I felt a little more hopeful after today!

I was being facetious. 😛

Hey aau22 did you talk to Carolyn Couch or someone else? Also, when you call do you ask to speak to someone in particular? Everytime I call they don't tell me anything.

I never ask for anyone usually I just try to talk to whoever picks up. Last time I called, the person was a stonewall and didn't give me anything but today the person was extremely friendly and I didn't even ask for info about my spot. When she asked my name I assumed it was just to record it as an interest call but she right away told me how my position has been reached usually so I think its just luck of the draw who picks up.

Yeah, I figured it was luck of the draw, this process sucks...I hope next time I call I get to speak with the person you did 😉

That's pretty much what I was thinking.
I would feel like a pretty big a$$ if I turned down a Binghamton spot and it later turned out I could not get a Syracuse spot and did not get accepted anywhere. After all, isn't it exactly the same except for 3rd and 4th year? I mean, everybody takes years 1 and 2 courses together at Syracuse anyway, so I suppose you have two years to try and switch, right?

Don't count on being able to switch. It's not nearly as easy as some people think. You have to apply to swith and you need a good reason ("I don't like Binghamtom" or "I don't want to move" is not a good reason). For every person that switches from Binghamtom to Syracuse, one person must switch from Syracuse to Binghamtom because they have a set class size. If you are accepted to Binghamton, plan on going to Binghamton. There is a chance you will be able to switch, but don't count on it.

Good luck to all of you.

Don't know if it helps, but at my interview I learned that the advantages if Binghampton are that you will be doing more procedures yourself - more autonomy 👍

The reason I am hesitant about Binghamton is that I have absolutely zero interest in community/family medicine and internal medicine. I would rather pursue another career than do IM. I am most seriously headed in the neurosurgery/surgery direction (possibly emergency medicine or trauma surgery). I imagine it is not impossible to match into residencies in those areas from a clinical experience at Binghamton, but it seems as though it's certainly not the mission or expertise of that campus. However, if there is more autonomy and less competition for procedures because fewer people at that campus are interested in those specialties then I could see that as a positive.

Facing the possibility of having to wait a year and reapply or going offshore and then trying to match into surgery seems like an even worse proposition than Binghamton, however.

You could always accept a Bing position and try to trade for a syracuse position before third year rolls around.

I called today...they are sorting through the people holding multiple acceptances and will start getting down to business (calling wait list folks) next week. Hang tight!

You should talk with someone at Upstate about this, but I'm almost positive you can do electives at Syracuse. You just have to do your core clerkships at Binghamtom. Like I said, verify this yourself. I'm set for Syracuse all 4 years, so I didn't check it out myself. One of my friends wanted to switch from Binghamtom and is finding it highly unlikely (and she even has several "good" reasons). She too is concerned about specialties, but she said she could do her electives in Syracuse. I would think that the disadvantage would be that the important people in the specialty department would not know you until 4th year when you are getting ready to apply for residencies, where they might have known you since 3rd year if you did your clerkships in Syracuse. If you take some initiative, you will likely be able to spend some time with the neurosurgery/(whatever you want to do) attendings first and second year, so that can help them get to know you. You can also try to make the most of your time at Binghamton and take every opportunity you can to get involved with neurosurgeons (or whatever). I am a first year and I have found the surgeons to be very willing to have me around. You are right that it's possible that certain attendings will know you better at Binghamtom and that's a bit of an advantage (but I think if you are interested and ask to do stuff that attendings in Syracuse should have no problem knowing who you are either), but you also want to make sure you know the people in the department at Syracuse if you're thinking about a competitive specialty. Bottom line- Syracuse is probably better for those specialties but going to Binghamtom should not rule you out. You just might need to take a little initiative and make sure those departments know you. If it was Binghamton or no med school, I'd take Binghamtom. Binghamtom is definitely better than going off-shore. If you go to a foreign school you will have a more difficult time matching. Just don't count on switching. That's wonderful if you pull it off, but you will likely be disappointed if you accept the Binghamtom spot with the intention of switching.

I wish UPSTATE ADMISS would post and set us straight.

hey guys...I got a call from Carolyn Couch tonight and I think its good news but I have to call back in the morning. Looks like they are starting to move! I will post more tomorrow. Good luck to everyone! 🙂

I didn't get any calls yet, but I did check off that I would accept a spot at either campus, although I listed Syracuse as my preference.

hey, wow, that's awesome news! it sounded like you really wanted to get in. i'm glad to hear you got it, and a spot in syracuse too! best of luck at upstate. congratulations. 👍

Congratulations you guys!! I hope that I get to let you know that I get in soon...I called today and they were a brick wall again...

Congrats to those who are off the waitlist 👍

I am in the same boat as you m1prsche.

😳

I haven't posted in a while, but I wanted to say congrats to flyingblue and everyone else who was offered a spot!

I still haven't heard anything unfortunately.....I don't know if this is helpful to anyone else who's still waiting with me, but I was told by a friend that schools are officially allowed to drop people who are still holding multiple acceptances as of the end of this week. So, many schools including Upstate may be waiting until that deadline passes to start calling more people.

Good luck to everyone who's in and to those who are still waiting!

so, i've decided not to accept the acceptance offer from upstate (for the syracuse campus). ms. couch won't be in the office tomorrow, but i will let her know first thing on monday. i hope one of you guys can nab my spot! best of luck.
