Hi,
I will be starting Upstate Med in fall '06. I am considering living in Clark, Madison, or Jefferson Towers and would really love any advice on choosing between the three. Which one is best for an MS1 and which is the cheapest?
Thanks so much!

There isn't really a best choice per se. You really can't go wrong with any of them but I think that a number of people find that it's just easier to be tapped into things going on around campus, at least initially, by living in Clark. I'm in Clark as an MS1 right now and am planning to go to Madison next year. The thing is, with Clark, you definitely pay for the convenience in that it's about as expensive as either Jefferson or Madison with less amenities but it is nice to be able to roll out of bed and go to class (especially with a lot of snow on the ground). Clark is definitely dorm life and that's hard for some people who've been living in an apartment for several years. On the other hand, it's very nice to be able to just walk across the hall and bounce an idea off of a friend, which you may not be able to do in the towers. Several people chose Madison because they have pets, if that matters to you. Other than that, it's really a matter of personal choice.

Hope this helps. See you next year.

They're all pretty convenient. Madison and Jefferson are a little longer of a walk. It takes about 7 minutes to walk to the hospital and then you can cut through to Weiskotten for class. If you don't mind a dorm, Clark might be easier and you'll have the advantages that Dave mentioned. With all of them, you'll have to bundle up for the walk when it's cold, but I would guess you could walk from Clark to the hospital in about 3 minutes. Sometimes people in Madison and Jefferson do walk to class together. That will depend on how outgoing you are and how often you want to go to class. If you want an apartment, I don't think there's a huge difference between Madison and Jefferson. Madison allows pets and has a parking deck (so if you can get on the lower levels, you won't have to scrape ice off of your car, but sometimes you have to park on top). I think Jefferson might be cheaper. You'll still be in a convenient location for study groups at Madison and Jefferson, but I think there's more of a community going on in Clark. If you want Madison of Jefferson Towers, you should get on the waiting list right now. I live in Madison, so if you have any specific questions about Madison Towers, I'd be happy to answer them.
