I am starting my residency at SUNY upstate next year, I did one month in the anesthesia dept. last year and I loved the department and the staff. The program is a growing program, they just got a new chairman from Texas Heart. Teaching is becoming a priority there, and like any program, it is hard work, but you are not abused, from what I saw. SUNY was my first choice, the PD is great, and the assist PD is very protective of his residents (firm but fair). The cost of living is still good in the area and the hospital is growing. The residents seem to get along as a team, and the opportunites are good. The only weak part of the program is that there is no OB in house, but as a strong fix, you spend a month at Brigham and Woman's in Boston, they have a condo for the resident to say in. I really think the program has the potential to be a powerhouse in the future, and like any good stock I got in on the ground floor and I think it will go through the roof in the near future.
