Hey guys, I notice a number of schools ask about how things may have adversely affected your performance.

I just want an honest opinion, I'm very hesitant on even mentioning it, but this past year was pretty rough in terms of things I couldn't control happening. Throughout my busy times of the semester I ended up being involved in two separate car accidents and also having my apartment flooded at one point by a really bad toilet faucet malfunction. I'm the first not to make any excuses, but I do feel like these things ALTOGETHER affected my performance.

What I'm wondering is if it's even worth mentioning or if schools will think I am trying to find ways to make excuses.

Just wanted some honest input guys. Thanks!

I feel like answers to that question should only be if you have an extremely extenuating circumstance (ie-death of an immediate family member, severe illness requiring hospitalization, unexpected surgery). I would always be careful writing anything in that section because even if you write something like "my mom was diagnosed with cancer," odds are there will be another applicant with cancer themselves AND who's mom died. Get what I'm saying? There very well might be someone with even more difficult circumstances. If your car accident resulted in you being hospitalized for a month, then yes, that might be something to mention. But, the problem with your toilet is just one of those annoyances that life throws at us from time to time.

Hey really appreciate the input! Thats exactly what I was looking for haha
