Hi everyone!

So i start my surgery rotation in 2 weeks and after that i do OB and i was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for what the best shoes are?
i was planning on wearing my sketchers shape ups and delude myself into thinking they ar giving me some benefit while i run around the hospital, but then i got worried that they would get dirty with "fluids"....

any suggestions??
thanks!!!

cheap tennis shoes you don't mind getting dirty. Don't wear white shoes or people will make fun of you for being a nurse or something.

Also there is nothing you can really do to keep your feet from hurting when standing for hours on end. I have tried everything and have given up at this point.

Seriously? It's old school to operate in white shoes. I feel like it's an attending-level move, though.

I don't know about the Skecher's Shape ups, but I've seen a bunch of attendings walking around in the MBT shoes. I think they're virtually the same.

I'd go with leather shoes. They're easier to clean than tennis shoes, which will soak up blood, etc.

Keep trying. I use Brooks with quite a bit of success.

cute, cheap, comfortable, and make it pink 😛

the MBT shoes look cool. a tad pricey but are they worth the price?

For surgery, I suggest patent/smooth leather Sanitas/Danskos. No shoe covers. Very comfortable for standing, and I never had crazy splatter/fluids that couldn't be wiped off with a sani-wipe.

For OB, same shoes but absolutely wear moon boots over them.

Shoe covers are highly annoying and I always feel that I'm about to slip.👎

The single best thing that you can do for your feet in between operations is to bring a second pair of socks. Nothing feels better than that in ten seconds or less.

MBT got away with being so expensive for so long because they were the only ones really doing it. Now even walmart has their own version. Yes, MBT uses real leather and some other higher quality materials, but for something you're going to primarily walk in, "wear and tear" isn't quite the issue it is for your running/workout shoes. Any brand will probably do the trick, but you should definitely go out and try on a few before deciding.

MBTs, etc are pretty heavy, so be sure to build up appropriate ankle strength so that you don't twist it on a rotation.

I think that if you're already moderately active, you won't see as much return from the MBTs as someone who is starting from a relatively inactive state.

Then again, I am becoming a "minimalist" runner so the thought of wearing something with more than a few mm of sole makes me crazy.

Dansko has been making "professional" clogs for a really long time for a reason.

(ps, I worked in a shoe store that sold both MBT and Dansko for over two years, so I am pretty familiar with the brands)

oh, and... medicine is good.

Danskos are the shoe of choice here. I found mine at about half the price of what everyone else paid at 6pm.com 🙂

danskos are better than sanita you guys think?

Wear shoe covers. I'll wear the knee high ones if I expect things will get wet and wild.
Agree. I'd regularly go down to the ortho rooms and steal their moon boots. Nothing ruins your day like vagina all over your Jordans.

it's like that scene in The Shining with the blood coming out of the elevator
Whoa, now that's a visual. Going...up?

The problem with danskos is that you always look like some sort of douchebag elf when you wear them.

Not really. A lot of people wear them. Be they residents or students.

Just because a lot of people wear them doesn't mean they don't look like douchebag elves.

i dont really care how i look i them as long as they are comfortably for 8-15 hrs a day lol. and i feel like ive seen many wear the same style, maybe even same brand.

thanks for the suggestions guys!! im gonna see if i can choose between sanita and dansko...somehow

hahahaha, good to know I've looked like a douchebag elf 75% of the time for the past 5 years

Does anybody know if Sanita still makes vegetarian shoes? They used to, and I still have a pair, but they are getting really worn out. The only Sanitas and Danskos I've seen in the past year or so have been leather.

I think I've seen them around on zappos and what not.
