I am starting DO med school in the fall. I aspire to become a surgeon, perhaps orthopaedic. What do I need to do to accomplish this? I have heard that you need to be a stellar med student, kick ass board scores, published research, and have awesome letters of recomendation. I would like to know how this is possible to live and attain all of these criteria. If this is what I need to do to become a surgeon, then I might have to reconsider. Please respond with any thoughts..........

However, your chances improve incrementally with having those endowments.

I suggest USMLE scores in the 230s, doing well in your clinical years, having participated in research, and having favorable letters of recommendation. Do the best you can in all years. Get to know the members of your orthopedics department and ask if you can shadow or do research with them (try to assist before jumping the gun and asking to publish). Do away rotations your senior year.

However, if you want to land an otolaryngology residency spot, you must possess the above attributes you stated. 😎

If you have some time for some light reading before school starts, I would suggest that you purchase "Iserson's Getting into a Residency" or "First Aid for the Match". Both books have excellent advice on how to excel in medical school to match in the specialty of your choice. Good luck.

neutropeniaboy,

This is off the subject, but did you interview at the University of Maryland for ENT? Do you know anything about that program? I'm considering doing an away rotation there. Thanks for your advice in the past.
