I have heard that you need to be a stellar med student, kick ass board scores, published research, and have awesome letters of recomendation. •••••I can't speak for osteopathic residencies, but what you've heard about orthopedics is greatly exaggerated, as you need none of the above to land an orthopedic residency spot. However, your chances improve incrementally with having those endowments.
I suggest USMLE scores in the 230s, doing well in your clinical years, having participated in research, and having favorable letters of recommendation. Do the best you can in all years. Get to know the members of your orthopedics department and ask if you can shadow or do research with them (try to assist before jumping the gun and asking to publish). Do away rotations your senior year.
However, if you want to land an otolaryngology residency spot, you must possess the above attributes you stated. 😎
