Has anyone done their 12 week Surgery core rotation in Las Vegas? If so, which hospital (or which preceptor)? I'm a US-IMG and I'm trying to schedule my Surgery rotation in LV, but don't have the slighest idea on how to do it or who to contact!

Any and all help/advice is welcome 🙂

Well, you list your location as LV, so certainly you have some knowledge of what hospitals are there. Doesn't your school help you set up your Cores? Most programs don't allow IMGs to do their Cores in the US unless you have some formal relationship with the school.

You need to do your Cores (and for that matter, all electives) at hospitals with ACGME residencies in the relevant specialty (Surgery in this case). In Las Vegas that would only be:

University Medical Center (UNLV) program

I recommend you contact the Department of Surgery there and ask if they allow foreign students to do Core Surgery clerkships. They may even have the info on their web site; as a matter of fact they do...

Winged Scapula,

Thanks for the reply. My school has other rotations set up here in LV, but not Surgery as of yet. So I'm pretty much on my own, unless I want to relocate for 3 months to complete Surgery (where my school does have sites). I'll try contacting the coordinator at UMC as you recommended, but I've heard that they do not allow (or are very strict) towards IMG's rotating there. My only other option would be to ask around and see if I can find a General Surgeon who is willing to host me for my clerkship (as a preceptor).

I would be careful about setting up a core clerkship with a private practice general surgeon.

Its fine for an elective but some states require that all your core rotations be at hospitals with ACGME/Osteopathic residencies when you apply for licensure. You don't want to spend 12 weeks doing a rotation and then find out that some states won't accept it.

I had a classmate who did a rotation with a friend of her father - private practice. Pennsylvania refused to accept it as counting toward the total time she needed for clinical rotations because it was not in an ACGME/ACOME hospital. Fortunately, she had enough weeks otherwise to qualify for a license.

I'd recommend being safe and relocating for 3 months if you have to.

Hm, interesting. I didn't realize that. I'm graduating from a US ACGME school. I did my surgery rotation at a hospital that doesn't have a residency program, but serves as the community rotation for residents at our University program. Does that count?

Its an issue for IMGs/FMGs/grads of Unaccredited Medical School doing Cores away frm their home institutions because of the "fear" that they may not be getting adequate training in other situations.

Since your rotation was done at a hospital which trains residents, it counts, as it would be considered an ACGME rotation site (ie, its been approved by the residency program). So affiliated sites are ok. Private practice rotations with a physician without a faculty title and program approval to train residents may not be, hence my "caveat emptor" advice to the OP.

Got it! Thanks, was just curious.
