so it turns out the shelf exam at our school is 5% of our grade with 10% oral exam. i was thinking about using pestana/nms casebook to prefer for the topics in the oral exam (they give us suggested topics in advance) and uworld for the shelf, and surgical recall during for pimping. thoughts? is this spreading myself thin?

Wow. Interesting breakdown for grading.

Given that the grade will be mostly subjective, I'd definitely place a lot of emphasis on Recall. It's gold for pimping and should help you for the oral exam as well.

UWorld and Pestana will help for the shelf.

If I were going to add a text that will help for everything above, the oral/shelf and your overall looking smart on the wards, I'd try the NMS surgery casebook...

I also liked Lawrence's "Principles of General Surgery" if you wanted a good reference to get med student-level information on a topic. Only ~250 pages if I remember correctly.

+1 for NMS casebook. One of the most single most useful resources I used during 3rd year.

hey zagdoc is it possible to post a link to that book, for some reason i cant seem to find it, thanks

Does anyone have any experience with Washington Manual of Surgery? I heard its a pretty solid book for daily reading. Trying to find a "text" to pair up with Kaplan and UW.

Hi are all the other NMS casebook's as good for their own rotations such as IM, etc or will UWORLD be good enough on it's own for all the other subjects?

I would suggest Uworld, NMS casebook, and the vignette half of Kaplan for surgery (basically the exact same as Pestana)

It's one of the easier shelfs

Good luck!
