Schwartz, Sabiston, or Greenfield?? Which do you like best and why??

Any input would be appreciated, I can't afford to buy all 3.

And what about ACS Surgery? Appropriate for an intern?

As a first-year resident, I haven't read any of them yet, but I chose the Schwartz... highly recommended by my program director because it's the "easiest" and "most enjoyable" (whatever that means) to read. I was told however that a lot of residents liked the new 17th edition Sabiston because of the graphical content.

I have looked at all three since I need to buy one as well. Sabiston definitely seemed the most user-friendly/easier to read (plus the color is nice). Sabiston covers some topics far more concisely than Schwartz in that Schwartz appeared to cover lots of basic molecular and histological details in great detail (and as a resident do I need to know the amino acid sequence of proteins?). I have a hard time reading/skimming over this kind of thing, and then end up losing focus. But that's me. I've heard a lot of residents say Greenfield is a nice read as well, but it seemed very dry to me.

GO to the bookstore and look at all three. You might want to look at Cameron too. Pick the one that YOU think you'll be able to read with the least amount of difficulty. Find out if your program endorses one book more than the rest; some places require you to read a certain text.

Thanks. Still looking for input from any senior residents who've actually read these books. There's only so much you can gain by skimming the texts in the bookstore.

Hi there,
I was a great fan of Greenfield until I picked up the new edition of Sabiston. It is a great book and very readable in this edition. Of the three texts, I believe it is the best. The new Schwartz is not much of an improvement over the old version. If you really know everything cold from Lawrence, you will be miles ahead too. Now if Greenfield comes up with a new edition, Mmmm?

I've been using Sabiston's for the past year, and really like it. It's the book our program uses for Core Curriculum as well, so I lucked out there.
