i just started today, and im not lovin it. im pretty sure this is a very common sentiment. its always so hard to start a new rotation at a new hospital (you dont know anyone, or where anything is, or how to use the computer, etc) but dealing with surgery personalities (aka unapproachable and stressed out) doesnt help!!

im just upset and i hope the next couple months are better. i actually like the medicine behind the surgery and dont despise the OR. im just not looking forward to prerounding at 5am and the hectic days that seem to lie ahead.

🙁

just wanted to whine a little. any support out there? show some love...

As an internist:

There has got to be one or two approachable people - maybe surgery interns or residents, maybe an attending, maybe even an anesthesia doc. Talk to them.

If you know you're not going to be a surgeon, volunteer to help out with work on the wards and in the ICU. The cutters want to be in the OR and won't care if you're adding up 24 hour ins and outs and watching labs. Talk to the consultants (ID, renal, oncology, whoever) about the patient and don't be afraid to ask radiology faculty to look at films with you.

I learned a lot about cancer, bilary tree disease and wound care on my surgery rotation and I still use some of that information now. Don't give up so soon - try to focus on the parts you find relevant to whatever it is you're going to do with your career.
