What are good surgical numbers for gyn? APGO's directory has great information, but I'm not sure what kinds of minimums to look for in evaluating programs.
Thanks!

I got a sheet from one of the programs I interviewed at that stated what the "avg" numbers should be for stuff like vag hyst and etc. However, since I am currently in the middle of packing, I don't know where that sheet is. But from what I can remember for vag hyst the avg is 20-30. That's the only one I can somwhat remember. Sorry, been done with clinicals for one week and my brain goes to the crapper  . Hopefully, someone else out there will chime in.

Thanks flea girl! Good luck with your move. Anybody else have imput? Please!!!!

A program that has strong numbers will be able to provide you with their average numbers per graduating senior , as well as a percentile scores to tell you how they compare to other programs for each procedure. I found any other numbers to be pretty useless.

Thanks Embryo2006! You wouldn't happen to have any of those around, to share what numbers are median or whatever? I'm not worried about sections... mainly vag hysts, anterior and/or posterior repairs, birches, etc. APGO has a column broken down by surgery per resident, I'm just not sure how to tell if 30 vag hysts/resident are enough, that sort of thing.
Thanks again!

I remember hearing that 30 vag hysts was a good number, but what does that mean? 40 vag hysts would put you around the 80th percentile nationally. I wish I could go back to some of my interview packets for you, but I pitched them all a while ago. UAB had some pretty impressive surgical numbers (high percentiles) if you're able to track those down. I used them as a sort of benchmark when looking at other program stats that didn't provide the percentile numbers.

Most programs will provide the OB you need. Getting experience in ectopic Sx lapsoscopic Sx , breech deliveries, forcep deliveries, and vag hyst seem to be the downfall of many programs. 40 Vag hyst as primary surgeon would be a good number. At least 100 L/S Sx and hopeully 20+ ectopics. In addition you want to make sure you log your TV ultrasounds. As far as breech deliveries most institutions will do Csec unless an emminent breech comes in. In twin caes of vertex / breech some dill do breech extraction but from what I've seen it is the older more experienced attendings that will do these. Most institutions I think will do IUFD breech. Forcep has fallen out of favor to vacuum except in preterm deliveries. Some attending will use forceps for rotation a good number 20.

This is just my 2 cents from talking with many other residents from different programs.

Thanks Embryo and Diane. That was exactly what I was looking for! 🙂

Hi there

I'm new on this network, so sorry you get to be the test message. I'm in New Zealand, and also abit of a tired mum. Could you let me know is it only academic problems, discussions on here, or do people talk about their non-study lives. Part time work? Kids etc?

Welcome!
It's a bit of everything. It tends to be more school/residency/practice related in this forum, in my opinion. I really have gotten a ton of information here that I wouldn't have found otherwise. Some of the other forums, such as the non-trad, clinical rotations, allopathic, general residency to name a few, have more general topics.
