I have heard a lot of talk bout getting straightaway into IR fellowships after doing 2 yrs of any surgical speciality. Is it really true?
Do all the IR fellowship programs allow it. I actually heard that Program directors actually prefer ppl who have done 2 yrs of surgery rather than residency in rads for IR fellowships.

correct me if im wrong, but i was under the impression that other than the DIRECT pathway (still a 6 year program), an IR fellowship would require at least 5 years GME prior.

That impression is incorrect. There is actually no requirement other than specific departmental ones for duration of GME prior to IR fellowship. Most programs will prefer to give their spots to docs after radiology residency is complete, but there is no absolute requirement for any GME, explaining why foreign radiologists are allowed to come in and fill those slots: no need for ABR certification.
