Suspended from undergrad university???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
shoot for 33

of all infractions, alcohol is by far the most kosher. Getting suspended for cheating, assault, etc....will ruin your chances.

and obviously, as you stated in your post, don't do it again.

I think it will definitely affect you, but in what way is largely up to you.

if you present it honestly and make it clear that it was a mistake (or series of mistakes) that you have learned from, it may even help in some cases. medical schools aren't looking for angels, they are looking for mature adults who can handle themselves.

nip it in the bud. be concise and sincere, and give the schools a lot of other things to look at to show that you have come out of the experience a stronger and wiser person.

It will affect you. But if enough time has passed and you've kept your nose clean, you can actually benefit from discussing what you've learned from your mistakes. Some schools are pretty lenient about alcohol violations, and some are harsh, so it's hard for them to judge (unless they know the school well) whether you were finally penalized after multiple egregious violations, or you were harshly penalized for attending a party that got busted.

Unless you find an inside source who can tell you what your school's ADCOM will say, my advice is to come clean about what got you in trouble. It's better to admit to buying kegs for underage students than it is to pretend you were just one of 50 people busted for having a beer at a party, if the pre-med committee is going to explain your infractions anyway.

It's not the end of the world. Involvement with illegal or prescription drugs would be FAR worse, since drinking is considered by most people to be par for the course in college, whereas drug use is considered a serious problem. The truth in this is subjective, but that's the popular sentiment. Med schools will usually forgive such "youthful indiscretions." Cheating, drug use, and criminal activity are viewed in a more serious light.

Holy crap, how many violations did you have? 😕

This is a good question...if it took multiple violations to get suspended you may deal with admissions committees questioning your judgment. So in addition to the "I learned not to do illegal stuff" lesson you may want to add something about how your judgment is normally good.

Good luck.

Tough luck homie. I think you'll be fine. Just give some well-though bull**** excuse as to why your drinking was immoral and how you will never drink again or whatever.

America's such a ****ty country when it comes to rights these days.

A 17 year old man can go and die in a war, but can't drink until he's 21?

For ****'s sake.

Only good for making money and nothing else.

Fight the good fight young man, and give a big **** you to your university and any med. schools that frown upon you by playing them at their own game.

Apologize, give a bull**** excuse, and move on.

Infraction 1
Beer in my room freshman year. 1 Strike.

Infraction 2-Junior year
Drank some mix at a party that turned out to have grain alcohol in it. I left the party and immediately went home because i was not feeling well. Instead of staying inside i ended up outside and was just laying on the ground. I was not throwing up or acting in a violent manner. The cops came and just scooped me up. I was very angry with the cops, for i felt i was not causing any problems. In all honesty i was just trying to sober up. Wound up in jail overnight...worst experience of my life.

They gave me a double strike for the second infraction due to my high BAC.

, c'mon you had to say something to the cops or have done something? your SDN handle is Doctoberfest

although I will say, some schools seemed to be really strict about this alcohol thing, crazy

LOL
It turned out to have grain alcohol in it? You sure you weren't a freshman then? I mean, what did you think the PJ had in it 😛. Great tasting deadly stuff lol, gotta love it.

This sucks, however, you could turn the tables and use it to your benefit. You could do this by first receiving some sort of treatment, and then helping others who suffer from drug and alcohol problems. Perhaps alcohol and drug abuse is one of the main issues you would like to address as an MD; since we still know relatively little about the subject, comparatively.

Here's how it could not at all affect you - this route probably isn't worth the time investment for you, however, since your stats are good.

Do a two year (or 1.5 year) masters, apply between years one and two, ask your graduate school to write your cover sheet, after giving them all your LORs. Your undergrad school will not be communicating with med schools nor with the grad school writing your committee letter in any form.

Why not just give a presentation to high school kids about the dangers of underage drinking? Shows that you learned from your mistake and want to prevent others from making the same mistake you made.

And quit getting in trouble.

Describe it as you did in your follow-up message. It might delay but won't prevent you from getting interviews.

Different schools have different policies and many med schools know this. What is an infraction resulting in a night in jail at one school is a night in the infirmary at another school. It is an injustice to toss an application just because the applicant had the misfortune of going to a school with a "no-mercy" policy.

First, why did they arrest you for lying outside on your own property (or was this at an apartment complex)? Second, why did the cops breathalyze you if you weren't driving? I may have a bad understanding of the law but I thought that neither of these things should have happened?
