Hi all,

A friend and I have begun shadowing at a local vet clinic, and I have shadowed there before (about a year ago). Each time, I have always worn business casual. We have shadowed twice and have worn nice clothes both days. However, another girl was there also shadowing and she was wearing scrubs. I have also previously seen someone shadow wearing scrubs here. While the girl in scrubs was an undergrad student, we are both high school seniors.

We have set up a schedule to start shadowing twice a week after school and it'd just be easier to wear scrubs then to pick out new outfits to wear for just a few hours. We are shadowing tomorrow- Do you guys think it'd be acceptable for us to show up in scrubs this time? The manager has never specified what to wear, nor have I really asked, but I figure if these other shadowers have worn scrubs it would be okay for us.

thanks

Wear scrubs because if you end up getting hands on at all, scrubs are way better than business casual. You seem like you want to be more involved in things as well, imo.

Likely you should simply ask the manager or whomever else is in charge of your shadowing. Each atmosphere is different. You can always begin in business and bring scrubs to change into if needed.

This. Ask. Then you know the answer for sure and no longer need to worry about it.

I'm just here to beat the horse a bit more... :beat:

Just ask. Don't just assume and end up being wrong. Express your interest in possibly doing more (insurance/liability issues may or may not allow this though) and use that to segue into the scrub option. Awkward moment avoided.

I ended up in scrubs while shadowing at my vet's. Had to borrow a pair while watching surgeries.

I feel like that is much more likely to lead to an awkward moment by asking to do more.

Just ask if it would be okay to wear scrubs.... It's not that hard.

Exactly. My first shadowing opportunity I wore dresses every day until someone told me to start wearing a T shirt and jeans, so that was what I did! I also was in high school, didn't own scrubs yet, so they gave me a scrub top, and I wore jeans. But anyway, I think your situation sounds typical, you should ask your manager what she suggests you wear!
