Has anyone ever switched from Neuro to PMR?

I realized that PMR can basically do everything Neuro does fellowship wise except for stuff I dont really care about like epilepsy.

PMR can do sleep as well right?

Im just not an intense guy, dont really like being on call and I'm not saying PMR is easy but I think its definitely more my cup of tea. I also like the fact that PMR actually tends to physically do something for the patient unlike Neuro. Also I like how PMR docs tend to be the good guy in the patients eye.

I'm set to start my transitional year this June but I'm thinking of requesting a waiver for my Neurology residency from the NRMP so that I can apply for an open PMR position.

Has any one heard of this happening?

Anybody can do sleep if they do the training.

I agree and disagree with you about "the good guy"

Regarding Spine patients, I am the bad guy. I am the one who tells people to get off their ass and exercise if they want to get better. I say
"No pain, no gain" on a daily basis (while thinking, HTFU).

Other than that, you may be right.

I switched from radiology to PM&R during my TY year. It was a pain getting out of my radiology spot through the NRMP but definately doable. Keep in mind that it's an NRMP violation to contact any potential rehab program until you are out of your current neurology position. You have to be willing to sit out a year and go through the match again if you can't find an open PGY 2 position at a program you want to be at. I completely lucked out, found an open position at a fantastic program, and was only out of a spot for 2 weeks. Also, you need a flexible TY program where you can get some LOR's, get away to interview, etc. Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions about the process.

Hey thanks, I may PM you later this week.

What made you change your specialty and what made you feel so compelled to do so that you were willing to risk sitting out a year?

Thanks

I had a similar situation but I decided to switch 3months into my 1st year doing OBGYN. I got into an IM internship and switched from there. Don't expect too much sleep in PMR either.

im actually in the oppsite boat. I want to switch out of PM&R and go neuro. generalist at everything, specialist in a few, imho -- dont kill me for my opinion!

Care to share more on why?

Yes I am interested as to why as well. Lifestyle seems way better in PMR and compensation is better as well. Usually that makes people happier!
