Hi everyone,

So, I am so lost and losing my mind trying to figure this out and hoping someone has some experience.

I matched my top choice FM residency (graduated LECOM-Erie with GPA of about 3.5 a few days ago). I currently live near one city and I had always planned to stay for residency and my career. But, when my husband got a job closer to where I wound up matching, that's where I applied and wanted to match to make things easier on him and my children. However, now he has had a new opportunity become available closer to our home town again! (UGH! although it would be awesome to stay near family and in our current home, this is just stress I didn't need!) So, my top choice (if it didn't have anything to do with location) has a spot open. I e-mailed the PD today to see if they'd be open to taking me. My questions are though, is this really an option? can I transfer this late or should I plan on being off-schedule and starting in September or something like that? or do I need to just re-apply and wait until match again? ANY advice about this process or how it would work would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Comes down to whether your current PD will let you go and if the Buffalo PD will take you. Sounds like you need to have a heart to heart with your current PD.

If you don't get a quick response call and ask the new program, or arrange an interview. This is time sensitive; don't wait for them. If they are amenable and seem interested in having you, talk to your current PD and be honest about the situation. Have these conversation face to face. This is an understandable situation and the year hasn't even started yet.

We had a resident switch residencies just before PGY2 for similar reasons. So, it is possible.
