how's it going ?

I recently finished my first year of internal medicine internship, am taking a break now due to family reasons. I have had good evals this year and have the support of my program director.

I am interested in switching to Anesthesia. I unfortunately never have done a sub-internship or elective in anesthesia and we never had a formal rotation either at my medical school. My board scores are also not too high.

Here are my questions

1. Since anesthesia programs under ERAS are for 2 years from now, should I apply or hope that a PGY2 position opens up? I am concerned about the rarity and locale of such positions since I would like to be close to family in Southern California.

2. Would programs take me seriously given I've never had a formal rotation or letter of rec from anesthesia?

3. Should I do some sort of research to improve my chances?

4. Any other wise advice, greatly appreciated !

Why do you want to become an anesthesiologist? I would suggest volunteering at a local hospital. Ask their anesthesia department if you can shadow a doc. You'll gain valuable experience and possibly a letter of recommendation.
