Hi, I'm new, and would appreciate anyone's thoughts or insights regarding this issue. I've completed a few months of a path residency and have decided it's not for me. I am interested in starting as a PGY1 next year in psych (would have to do so because path has no prelim requirement). Is it difficult to make the switch? Would people view me as unreliable for doing so? Thanks for your insight.

Hi Foster, would you like to stay at your current site? Perhaps you could talk with your pd now and have them talk with the PD in psych for a transfer to take place. I don't know if this could work or not.

I would start by getting my feelers out for how your PD is going to take the news and then see if they are on your side or not - if they are I'll bet they could help you get a position by writing a letter for you, if they're disgruntled (which may be an issue since most programs that you will apply to require letters from current residency or previous residency) you could perhaps make a strong argument for why you need to switch and discuss that you will not just abandon the program etc, you will stay until your contract is up blah blah.

good luck and please keep us posted! I'm sure others will have some insight too 🙂 Welcome to psych!

We've got a path refugee in our program. She's mahvalous. It can be done.

You could scramble into one if you register for ERAS - however, you really do need that letter from your current residency first.

Good luck! btw, are you the OP? Your name is different

You also need to figure out why you've decided path is not for you and psych is. Are you just deciding you don't like it because no one likes the first few months of residency or is it more fundamental- like you'd like to be talking to people rather than looking at their body parts... 🙂 Good Luck
