When I submitted my rank list, I was between two specialties (IM and Anesthesiology). I ended up ranking two IM programs above Gas programs and matched into my second choice, which was an IM program. After doing another Anesthesia rotation, I realize that I made a mistake. I feel like Anesthesiology is a much better fit for me. I won't go into the details, but suffice it to say I really believe that gas is a better fit for me in terms of my personality and my interests. I am trying to figure out what my options are. Should I re-enter the Match for Anesthesiology programs that start in 2015 and do two years of IM and then make the switch? Should I talk to the PD about this? One of my fears is that won't have time to interview once I start my Intern Year. Another option is to try to get into a PGY-2 Anesthesia position that starts in 2014, but I feel like those are few and far between. Any advice would be helpful.

Does the place where you're doing IM have an anesthesia residency? Maybe your PD can help you get a PGY-2 spot there? Good luck

That is the best case scenario and I would try for that...though you must tread carefully. You want to be honest with your PD but not burn any bridges or make things awkward. Technically you can quit your intern year after 45 days or something like that, then you would be free to pursue any open GAS spots- either off cycle that year or beginning the next year, just be prepared to explain your situation. I am sure its been done but it seems very risky. I would shoot for honesty and explain your situation to the PD, perhaps he or she could help you land a GAS spot at the same institution. Good luck!
