Hi, I have applied to both IM categorical and ABIM research pathway this cycle and am not 100% sure what I want to do, even though I'm leaning toward research track.
If I match into research track, can I switch to 3 year categorical if I change my mind as a PGY1 or 2?
Is it frowned upon? (the only downside for program I can think of is that the program will have one more PGY3 than expected but is it a bad thing?)
Also, if the research track includes guaranteed subspecialty training, is it considered match violation if I "match" with subspecialty (I'm interviewing with the fellowship director as well) and drop out of research track? I guess the question is if the commitment I make when I interview for residency is a binding contract in any way.

From what I've seen so far, it depends on the program. At all the places I've interviewed for research track, they've said you can switch to categorical if you discover the research isn't really for you. I don't think it's considered a match violation, but the program directors might be a little irritated that they wasted a spot on someone who wasn't serious at the end of the day.

People drop out of the Research Pathway all the time. You might irritate somebody but you won't violate the Match contract.

Now...whether you would get to keep your subspecialty position if you bail on the Research Pathway is going to be completely up to the PD.

Thanks for replies. It was very helpful. I'd better make up my mind before Feb!
