So I'm in the National Guard on the ASR program. I love it, it is a great program. I also love going to drill and my experiences with the military thus far. I love it so much, that I might want to do it everyday as a military doc. Also, with health care reform looming, I am extremely worried about being able to pay back the nearly 200K I will be in debt from med school. I am also worried about even being able to make a descent living because of reform. So, after that long winded background story, I was just curious if anyone know if it would be possible and how much trouble it would be for me to switch over to Army HPSP? I mean we are both on the same team (Army), so would it be a big deal? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wow, 90 hits and nobody has any idea?
ASR has only been around for about two years and change with about 550 people having signed up. There are probably a little over a dozen of us on SDN. The odds of one of us trying to go from ASR to HPSP is pretty remote, so you might not get a lot of traffic on this.

Talk to the HPSP folks and see if they'd support this. I'd reckon the harder part is getting the Guard to release you from your contract. No one's rolling in doctors right now, so you'd probably understand if they didn't want you drawing payroll for five months and then bolting before paying anything back to the Guard.

Well I wouldn't say I haven't paid back anything, I mean I have been doing my job, and have put 5 people in the Guard. I just figured that since the Guard is part of the Army they might be cool with it. Your probably right though, the Guard needs docs as bad as anyone. I don't really know why I expected anyone to know because i doubt anyone in ASR has done this, so your right again. Just curious if anyone happened to know anything about it. Thanks for your input.
