TA as an undergrad for undergrads?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
is it possible for me to TA a class i really like even though i'm an undergrad? the teacher knows me very well and i have achieved highest scores on her exams

I TA'd a freshman chemistry lab. It's hard to yell at people who are practically your age

undergrads can definitely TA classes. from what i remember, undergrad TAs were usually seniors...

Was a TA for a philosophy class as a Junior. The Prof. asked me at the end my term while I was a sophomore, came out of the blue. I know of some cases where Ugrads have been TA's for Science courses so that is definitely possible as well.

Some colleges/universities have undergrad TAs; some don't. At my school it depends on the specific department. I'm an undergrad TA for undergrads now, and I have several friends who have done the same. It's fun, it pays well, and it's a great way to develop new skills (teaching) and a better understanding of the subject you're teaching.

Right. It really depends on the department and course. Talk to your professor about it.

You get extra bonus pts if you manage to hook up with a student too.

yep, def possible. i've been TAing (teaching sections 2-3 hours weekly) intro bio since fall of my sophomore year as an undergrad. great way to make money.

best way to land a position like this is to 1) make it known to the professor/dept that you're interested, and 2) be the most involved and at the top of the class you would like to TA yourself in later years. often TA undergrads are selected as the best students in the course they TA when they took it.

I TA'd a cell biology lab as a junior this past semester, and I'm probably going to do it again in the fall. It's a lot of fun. Just ask the professor.

At my school professors will approach the students they want as TAs but it can't hurt to ask. Whether undergrad TAs are allowed probably depends on the university and how many grad students the department has that need the jobs.

yeah, same with my school - you have to be officially invited by the department. with labs, for example, your TA should give you a letter at the end of the semester with a formal invitation to be a UTA for that particular class.

downside (at least at my school) = doesn't pay a dime. you sign up for a 1 credit class called "training in science leadership".

It probably depends on your professor/university. My university normally does not allow TAs who are undergrads, but it may be different for you depending on where you go, especially if there is no graduate school i.e. Kenyon,

yeah just check with the prof you want to TA for.. it's almost always department/professor-specific..
