What does everyone think of Tablets? I am thinking of maybe getting one, but don't even know the first thing about them. What kind of tablets do you guys reccommend, or not reccomend? what are the advantages/disadvantages of their uses? etc. etc.

***Thought I would create the tablets its own thread, since that other thread got hijacked and this allows others with the same questions the ability to see your opinions lol***

I am glad you started a separate thread because I am looking at tablets right now and would love some pros/cons.

I technically have a tablet right now - it is the HP tx1000. It is useless. Pretty much serving as a paperweight right now. I, obviously, do not reccomend this hunk of junk if you intend to do anything other than word processing (and it is even bad at that). It was however cheap (699 two years ago). Within two months, the screen died, the wireless adapter died twoce, and now the motherboard has died (a known defect from many many users). Then I dropped it a snapped a piece off the frame (because it is actually made of plastic, it is that ghetto). Luckily, I was smart and bought a 3 year accident everything warranty!!

I am strongly considering the Lenovo X200, but it is super $$ and I am not sure if it is worth it.

If you keep a decently close watch on SlickDeals.net, you can often catch Lenovo tablet PCs for nice prices. (~$6-700) I just sit and watch them sadly, since I'm poor. 🙂

Good thing for us just happened as well. You can now claim computers for educational expenses on your taxes, when you file next year! So, at least that will help offset some of the costs.

I have one of my technologically savvy friends looking into the best one to get. I'll let y'all know what she finds out.

Is that new? Claiming your computer? I've always done it :scared:

Umm, I'm not sure. I got an email from Turbotax saying that it was a recent change to the tax law, for 2009. So, I assume it is new.😕

Hopefully the IRS doesn't troll these threads, just in case!:xf:

i think you might be able to argue a little if the IRS comes knocking...

I keep trying to shop around, but all the decent ones look over $1000, and i would really rather not spend that much... am i just being super cheap, am i going to have to look over that price for a decent one?

I had a similar computer to this, an HP tx something purchased in 2007 and had similar problems. Except I did not buy the extended warranty and the motherboard went out on me 2 weeks after the 1 year warranty was up. Needless to say DO NOT GET IT! 👎

www.tabletpcreview.com has a lot of info regarding who makes tablets and what kind are out there, as well as expert reviews on most, if not all models. In addition, under the "Discussions" heading, there are forums about a wide variety of topics. The thread that was most helpful to me was one titled "Summer 2008 - Tablet PC buying guide" -http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/showthread.php?t=18554 It gave some good ideas regarding the most reputable brands, and the FAQ included in the guide gave a good idea about what tablet would work good for an artist/student/business/etc.

I found that it was a really great place on getting ideas about price/function/brands/etc., and I figured I would pass this along.

Thanks for the info Fierymicky!!!

I'll definitely check it out!

I have a Fujitsu and love it. Tablets are highly recommended @ Illinois and, although I know I'm not even close to using all the features, I am using it effectively. When I bought it last summer I still had an income so didn't hesitate spending the dollars for the Fujitsu, and other computers are cheaper, but I'd do the same, and will when I have to get another one. Their svc. is awesome.

i briefly read this thread, but didn't see anyone mention what i am considering - a mac laptop converted to a tablet.

no viruses/worms ever.

anyone?

Void warranty! I'm too much of a klutz to trust it, especially since I've never talked to anyone who's done the mod. . . let me know how it goes if you do - I LOVE my mac, and would LOVE a mac tablet.

Unless you're talking about something new?

Erghh, buying into in hook line and sinker, huh?

There are plenty of viruses and worms out there for Mac/Unix based OS's. Mac users are a small (but growing very fast) minority.

Don't be fooled, as soon as the population of Mac users reach a critical mass large enough that the authors and distributors care about targeting you, you will be hit, and hard. Mac OS is probably no more secure then Linux or even Windows, just not enough people are writing them... yet

I think I read somewhere that converting the labptop to a tablet voids the warranty, and therefore if anything goes wrong you're stuck paying for it. Not sure though, but it would be something to check out.
