I need some medical students' advice. I've been accepted with the prerequisites as a non-science major and am debating if I should take next semester off or take some science classes. I will earn my degree this semster, so next semester is completely optional. I am currently taking Anatomy w/o a lab just for prep but the rest is non-sci.

So, should I take next semester off and travel, relax, etc. prior to starting?

OR, take classes like biochem, microbio, cell bio, or anything like that? Are those undergrad classes really helping out (enough to take another semester)?

Your help is really appreciated 👍

i think it's a good idea to take anatomy as a preview. but other than that, i wouldn't recommend anything else. take the time to enjoy yourself because you'll be crazy busy when fall rolls around...

congrats!

A little physiology goes a long way. 🙂

PLAY!!!!! Go to Europe for a few months doing nothing but sight seeing, backpacking, and partying. You wont really be prepared anyway, even with classes. As long as you have good study habits, youll do fine. Play, play and play!!!!

I'd have to agree...Take the time off.

There really is no way to prepare for what's coming at you, so don't waste your precious pre-med school time by busting your butt in classes that will only help you out minimally once med school starts.

The fact that you would even ask this question leads me to believe that you are a well-rounded person who enjoys having fun outside of school. If you were a total type-A, obsessive/compulsive med-student-to-be, you would be thinking "Ohmygod! I've only got 9 months to prepare for the start of med school!"

Just be who you are, and enjoy your time to have "nothing" to do (which is counting down, by the way 🙂 ).

Right on. After reading your post, I realized that I really should take that time off and work a little harder the first month of medical school. Thank you for pointing that out!

Another vote for the "take 8 months off" option!

One of my interviewers at KCOM kept asking me how I was going to prepare for medical school between now and when I start in August! I was like, "uh...I was thinking about reading an anatomy book..." He really harped on this point-I thought it was silly. Of course I'm not going to do anything but enjoy myself between now and then-so that I can have plenty of happy memories to daydream about when I'm too busy to do anything else!

Are you serious? Unless you plan to get your PhD in Biochem in the next 8 months, take the time off!! You will never get this opportunity again. I will admit that previous experience with Biochem is helpful for the class, but for only like five minutes 😉 Plus, they teach you everything you need to know. No previous experience necessary. Hope that helps!
