Hello,

I have seen similar posts regarding this question but wanted to get advice on my particular situation. I applied to MD and DO this cycle and received two interviews and was waitlisted at both schools (Georgetown and FAU). I was accepted to a DO school (NSU) but am having serious doubts about attending. Now, I am interested in going into ENT and understand that the field is difficult to match into regardless of MD or DO degree. I completed the SMP program at Georgetown, ending with a 3.677 GPA. My undergrad GPA was a 3.7 from UF. My MCAT is lower at 507.

Not sure if you’re competitive enough for MD schools. You can roll the dice and see what happens but most people here probably won’t recommend that.

I was going to retake the MCAT, obviously no guarantee that my score would improve. I have read a lot of hate on NOVAs DO program so am scared to commit but understand the repercussions of not doing so.

Unless you retake the MCAT and get in the 515-520 range and applied this cycle (which, it's already July by the way), you'd be starting medical school 2 years later than you would be now at a minimum. Because applying this cycle without any substantial changes from your application last year is literal insanity (assuming you completed your SMP prior to submitting your application this past cycle).

Do yourself a favor and go be a doctor.

I completed my SMP program in June.

You might never be a doctor at all if you turn it down.

Chances are that even if you somehow get a MD acceptance, you won’t match ENT. Not trying to sound negative but people who match the top specialties are the top 1% who can party thru undergrad and get a 4.0, study for a week and get 520+ on the mcat. Sometimes we just have to settle with the hand we’re dealt.

In that case, the only way I would turn down the acceptance is if you already retook the MCAT or are about to retake the MCAT and can score above a 515.

If you wanted the SMP to make a dramatic improvement to your app, you needed to get a 4.0 in it. It doesn't appear that your SMP has improved your overall GPA at all. So, you are absolutely rolling the dice hoping that a school will like the fact you've done graduate level work (and speaking from experience, they don't really care unless you ace it).

Bottom line, I think you should take the acceptance and run with it. You applied with practically the same GPA last cycle prior to doing the SMP and only garnered 2 interviews. What do you think reapplying with the same GPA and MCAT is going to change?

I guess my other option would be to wait a year, focus getting my MCAT up, and applying next cycle.

What happens if no one at all wants you next year? Or the year after that?

great point. I would probably question whether I am actually meant to be a doctor.
Or maybe question how stupid you were for turning down an acceptance instead

Questioning that won’t depend on which school you ultimately attend. If your ego can’t take rejection from a certain school, it won’t handle a medical career.

I suggest you do some soul-searching prior to matriculation and taking out a small fortune in debt to become a doctor.

If you decide you want to pursue medicine, take the bloody acceptance you have now and run with it. Don’t look back. If you don’t want to pursue medicine, withdrawal so that someone else with the conviction can take your place.

I will give the same answer I always give to these types of posts.

Why would you reject a date w/ Jessica Alba, just for a CHANCE of a date w/ Megan Fox.

They were nice enough to say Yes to you….

Why do you want to reject a guarantee for nothing but complete speculation at this point? You could go to medical school now, not lose two additional years, still try to pursue your goal of going ENT, and most of all still become a freakin doctor. OR you could deny your one shot of becoming a doctor now, so you can reapply with absolutely zero guarantee of doing significantly better on the MCAT, zero guarantee of getting accepted to a MD, zero guarantee you'll get into ENT, and who knows, maybe when you get to med school you realize that you don't want to go ENT at all and you just realize all this valuable lost time was for absolutely nothing except being labeled MD instead of DO.

This just seems so incredibly narrow minded, yo have put in this incredible amount of work, you achieved what others can only dream of, for the sole reason of wanting to be only one type of doctor.

My vote, give up your one and only acceptance and let someone who actually wants to be a doctor get their chance.
