Hello guys,

I wonder if it is a good idea to take Human Anatomy in the summer.

Thanx,

Annie

I did that. It was a pain in the a@# though! I work full time so I had to take it at night. It was twice a week from 6:00-10:45 PM....but my teacher decided that we needed to know/learn more crap so he extended the class (almost each night) till bout 11:15-11:30 at night!! It was crazy but I'm kinda glad I did it cause the pain is short-term (only 8 weeks). I would do it if you're good with time management. And it would definitely help if you don't have to work. :luck:

I took Anatomy and Physiology I last summer. I was also working full time. It CAN be done, but I don't know how much of a good idea it is to do it. We had class twice a week for 6 hours a day (3 hours lab + 3 hours lecture). We had a "quiz" every day that consisted of 50-100 questions. I was able to stay on top of everything until we got to the skeleton, then I just started to fall behind. It was very overwhelming, and my instructor didn't cut any of the material from the course...not that I wanted him to but there's just SO MUCH to learn.

I had one of the highest grades in my class, and ended up with a B 🙁 A lot of people ended up dropping it. It hasn't even been a year later and I don't remember much about the names of certain parts of the skeleton or a lot of the muscles...but neither did any of the nurses I worked with. The team leader couldn't even remember how many ribs we have, and this was in an ICU

It's up to you really. I loved the course, and it was nice being able to only focus on it and not have to worry about other courses at the same time. Just make sure you have the time to put into it, and stay on top of everything.

thank you all for replying!

my school's human anatomy schedule for summer is from 8 am -12 pm ( both lecture and lab)...and everyday MTWThF....i hope i can handle the class itself alone since i'm not working or anything....

Wait, what?
You have 20 hours a week of anatomy for 8 weeks?

I think you might need to take a closer look at your schedule.

Well I took physiology for 6 weeks over the summer. I guess that's kind of the same.

I'm just a regular student with no job so I dunno. I barely got an A by half a point. I also took the whole year of O Chem in one summer at UCR. That wasn't so bad either.

Really, most summer classes are actually easier than taking it during the year because the professor always has to simplify the class. A lot of students and teachers say that the classes are HARD because it's crammed into one summer.

I mean if you're ONLY taking that one class, it's easier because you have only one class to concentrate on. But I would only recommend doing this if you're really serious cause it's still not a fun way to spend summer. And if you're good with summer classes.

As someone who has taken the following over the summer:

Calc II, Gen Chem II + lab, Molecular Biology, graduate level Immunology, and Animal Behavior (not all the same summer)

I would advise you to take easier classes during the summer and save your tougher ones for the regular semester. Summer school is bad enough. Cut yourself some slack. It can be really tough to keep up with lab and lecture in such a short time.

FYI, summer school sessions at UNC are 5 weeks long. A regular 3 credit class meets 1.5 hours DAILY MTWRF for 5 FULL weeks. Most of my professors didn't "dumb" classes down, they just had to trim stuff out.

i don't understand. anatomy is the easiest thing you'll ever do. Boring, maybe, but very easy and very necessary.

I agree. It's stupidly easy and good to take over a shortened summer session.

I almost had 20 hrs of anatomy per week for 8 weeks in the summer. 1-5 Mon-Thurs, so 16 hours. The last 2 weeks overlapped with a 6 week physiology course that met 6-10, Mon-Thurs.

Bottom line: it's totally possible in the summer, and it will probably be the only class you have, so you'll time to focus and really learn it.

no, not 8 weeks (or 2 months)...it only lasts about 1 month...06/20-07/22...

I took Anatomy 1st session summer, Physiologoy and Statistics second session the same summer. It sucked but I did it.

Suck it up. You can do it if you have to.

Anatomy during the summer requires about 2 hours of study PER DAY after class. At least. But lots of people do it. It can be done 👍

I am starting to think that this is a class that varies in difficulty from state to state, school to school, and as always... from teacher to teacher.

I expect it to be ok for me at the local community college.
I'll let you know...I'm taking it now in the spring. Also I took intermediate physiology before.

This really depends on how well you can memorize things. It is easy , but time consuming. You have to put in the effort to learn and identify all of the muscles (origins and insertions), bones (and their landmarks!! 😱 ), veins, arteries, organs (easy), major nerves, histology slides, brain components and there were some functions of the body we were required to know. However, these were focused on in Physiology and were a breeze to me. I thought that Physiology was easier because I could read a lot of the material once and it would just "stick". I loved that class and I agree with you that Anatomy was more boring (maybe that is why I found it harder). 🙂

Additionally, the cat dissection was gross! We also had a human cadaver, which to me was much more interesting and relevant.

Depends on where you take it.

FYI, when I was applying to pharmacy school, I talked to admissions folks and they told me that it is better to not take your prereqs during the summer if you can help it, since they want to see how you handle lots of science courses during a regular semester. Pharmacy school can't be taken part time.

Proceed at your own risk.

I will have to agree...I dropped the class a summer ago....so much info cramped into a short period of time... 😱

I know someone who had a 4.0 and took Human Anatomy over the summer and ended up with a B in the course....she was a little disappointed..

I was just wondering what you learn exactly in anatomy and physiology. Also this might sound stupid but is it possible to take the lecture one semester, then the lab? At my school the classes are separate.

They are often separate, so you can enroll in only lecture and not lab--some students only need a lecture to satisfy the prereqs for whatever they are going into. Typically, though, you can only enroll in the lab if you are in the lecture, so you probably won't be able to take them separate semesters.

They are combined at my school. It makes sense to take both the lab and lecture together though (especially for anatomy). My post above gives a short description of what anatomy is all about (it varies from school to school). Physiology is more learning about how the body systems work (Cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, immune, endocrine and nervous ect.) and how they interact with each other to maintain homeostasis and sustain life. It is a great class and it is very relavent to the pharmacy field. 👍

In a nutshell, anatomy is the science of "shape and structure of organisms and their parts". In human anatomy, it's basically a very comprehensive analysis of all the parts that make up a human body. For example, you will learn the names/locations/structures of the muscles and bones within the body. As well you'll learn all the layers of the dermis, different cells contained within, connective tissue, etc.

Physiology is described as the "function" of these parts. For example, in anatomy you'll learn the structure of skeletal muscle tissue, learn the name of the muscle, H bands/T bands etc but in physiology you'll study muscle contraction, and how it's initiated.

Same goes for neurons, in anatomy you learn all the neuroglia etc (terribly boring) but in physiology you may learn a ton about the nervous sytems as in ANS (ens + para/sympathetic nervous sytems) + SNS, etc. Physiology is more interesting.

Thanks for the info. It doesn't sound too bad.
