Taking a pet overseas for school

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am moving to Dublin and have already booked my flight - I leave on August 16th!!! I am taking all 3 of my dogs with me. I will be flying 2 dogs with me right now and then my 3rd will most likely be joining me in a few months. The whole process of getting them ready has been crazy with the paperwork, health requirements, etc. And I have been emailing the Dept Of Ag in Ireland a lot, but they are super nice and helpful. The biggest issue I found is that there are Approved Routes on certain carriers that you have to take unless you want to get preapproval to take another airline (and that is a whole slew of extra paperwork), so I am flying via Lufthansa connecting through Frankfurt, Germany in order to be on an Approved Route. Also the other huge issue with flying to Dublin is dogs have to fly in cargo which is ok, but they have to be booked on the same flight as their owner so I had to figure out logistics for that. It has been a lot of work, but I know it will be all worth it in the end to have them with me!

I am using a pet transport company in Los Angeles called Pacific Pet as it is required by Lufthansa Cargo. Not sure where you are located futurevet3000, but another company I spoke with who was really awesome and helpful was PetRelocation.com and they had agents in the UK as well helping with the transport which I thought was great. I spoke with a girl named Sarah there and she was extremely helpful - you should contact them! http://www.petrelocation.com/ I would have used them, but they do all connections through the UK which is not possible for me as my 2 of my dogs are pit bulls and would have not made it out of the UK alive.

Anyone seen this == http://www.defra.gov.uk/publications/files/pb13582-bringing-pets-to-uk110706.pdf

I am planning on entering the UK in the fall of 2012 to study abroad (and hopefully stay for vet school!) with my dog. If all he needs for travel is an ISO microchip, at least 21 days since UTD vaccine (he's 7 and never missed a rabies vax), Official Health Certificate, and travel an approved route, this makes my life a heck of a lot easier!!! Anyone know the scoop on this??

Yep! Those will be the new requirements in 2012, so you are very lucky!

The only thing they have not decided on is whether they still will require tick/parasite treatment 24-48 hours prior to flight, so you will want to check on this closer to your travel date. But otherwise flying to the UK will be much easier in 2012!

Yikes....

So it looks like my dog had her first rabies shot before the microchip; now the USDA says I need a wavier from Ireland. But Ireland says that's impossible.

But, ironically, in January the laws are changing and I'd have no trouble bringing the dog in. And while everyone I talk to seems to agree that it is a little silly and that yes, it is going to change - everyone says 'too bad'.

Has anyone else had similar problems....am I just SOL?

How long has it been since your dog was vaccinated? Can you just revax to get the paperwork sorted? Or is is too close to your departure date?

We could redo the process (correctly) this time; but the dog wouldn't be able to enter the country until a full six-months after the date. So, six months from Monday (January 25th). But I'll have to be there at the start of September.

I don't think I'll be able to afford the cost of keeping the dog in the quarantine 🙁

Is the quarantine only if your dog goes to Ireland before the rabies shots are figured out? Sorry I have no idea how this stuff works.

Can someone here hang on to him for you until you can get the paperwork sorted and then stick him on a plane?
