Taking a semester off?

Just curious- how does it look if a medical student takes a semester off? I know it probably depends on the reasons, but does anyone have experience with this, and if so, did it affect you in any way in the future, regarding residency, etc?

I'm not really sure, but I don't think you can take just a semester off from Med school. You might have to take off the entire academic year. Hope you get some more responses.
