Hi folks,

I will be starting my senior year this upcoming fall. I will not be applying to medical school this or next cycle as I will be doing post-bac research after I graduate. Anyways, my GPA is good and I believe that I have demonstrated at this point that I am a very good student.

...But enough about me now.

My friend lives abroad and she has invited me to come visit during a big national holiday. This holiday happens to fall in the middle of the upcoming fall semester (October). I would miss 1 week of class.

Do you think that I could make this work if I took a few weeks prior to the start of the semester to get ahead? I would also email all of my professors and let them know months ahead of time. Has anyone done anything like this before? I have never visited another country and I would really like to take this opportunity. Don't get me wrong, school is my #1 priority, but I have worked hard for the past 3 years, excelled and would like to explore a bit. Possible without jeopardizing grades?

Thanks!

Only you really know yourself well enough to determine if this is a wise idea. I did something similar this past semester for a week-long tournament. I too was super worried that it would affect my grades, but I finished the semester with a 4.00. Before I left for the tournament, I made sure to get far ahead in my assignments and to make sure I wasn't behind in any class. You can also contact your professors and explain the situation, and I'm sure they'd be willing to help you out. Since you've worked hard, I'd definitely go for it though! Just make sure to be smart about it!

What was your schedule like? If I may ask...

I was taking neurobiology, physiological psychology, advanced inorganic chem with lab, linguistics, and neuro research. It wasn't too bad, but it also wasn't the easiest semester I've ever had haha.

Just make sure you check all of the course syllabi to see that you don't have anything major due that week or exams, etc. If not, then as long as you stay caught up and even get ahead in your work, you should be fine taking a week off!
