hey SDN, this fall I'll be attending a 4 year university in Texas. however I plan on taking basic classes like English and college algebra in a community college nearby, while also taking classes in the university at the same time. I understand dental schools really don't favor cc, but I need to look out for massive debt. So my question is whether taking my basics at a community college will hurt my chances?

I don't see how taking course at both institutions would save you money. Universities charge a flat rate per quarter. So it doesn't matter if you take 12 units or 21 units.

My university charges $320/credit hour.

But to answer your question:
I would suggest you not take any prereqs in community college such as english, math, physics, and/or bio/chem. I didn't know some of the dental schools I was applying to didn't take community college credit (ex. Boston U., Temple, Tufts) so that knocked out some potential schools to get into...

There are a few universities who charge by credit hour instead of a flat rate for tuition.

I would say to definitely try and take those courses at your 4-year university if you can and to minimize the total amount of CC credits you'll have by the time you apply. I had a friend who took several pre-reqs at a CC and ended up having to retake them at a 4-year university because as you said, CC credits aren't really favored. Also, be sure to check each school's requirement for pre-reqs (e.g., some only take pre-reqs from an accredited 4-year college/university). Best of luck as you start college! 🙂

Is there any other dental schools that don't accepted cc credit? seeing that you have a university Houston seal, I assume your from Texas as well

alright thanks!

Taking CC courses concurrently with uni courses might raise some eyebrows, as it may appear that you took the courses at the CC because you thought you couldn't handle them at the uni level... I would recommend taking all your science courses at the university. If you still want to save money by taking some courses at a CC, make it humanities, history, etc.

You are also 4 years away from dental school and requirements could change between now and then. I agree that by taking classes at the CC while enrolled at a 4 year college is going to look suspicious on your transcript, not to mention that your credits at the CC might not transfer to your 4 year school because of that, and that it might jeopardize any financial aid or scholarships you are receiving.

well yeah english at my university is unconsistent due to different anonymous graders... do you think they'll question me about taking english at cc?

Not sure what you mean by that but yes, taking courses at a CC while you are taking classes at a 4 year college is going to raise flags for dental school admissions and just flat out is not a good idea.

The english professors dont grade the essays, but rather different grad students who aren't consistint with the grading. alright I guess there's no choice but to take it at the university
