I was just wondering everyone's thoughts regarding taking undergrad classes that aren't required for your major.

Right now I'm a freshman at a local college in Ashland, KY. I am planning to complete my degrees at the University of Kentucky. They offer a double-major program for Biology and Chemistry (BS in Bio, BA in Chem), which is what I'm doing. I'm really hoping to go to Med School after I graduate, but it's still a while off.

The thing is, the college I'm at now offers Medical Microbiology, with Anatomy & Physiology I and II being prerequisities. NONE of these three classes are required for my major, but I feel like I should take them, especially if I'm planning to go to Med School.

What do you think? Should I take these classes or stick to needed classes only. I'm here on a scholarship, so paying for extra classes isn't a problem.

Thanks for your input.

Jimmy

For undergrad, take what you want... explore, learn new things. You might even change majors. That's fine. Don't feel constrained to take classes solely within your major. You could even take some liberal arts classes.

Do yourself a favor, and take whatever classes you want...

If you are going to take them because you feel like you would enjoy them, go ahead. If you want to take them because it will make med school just a little bit easyer, go ahead. If you want to take them because you feel like you "should" to go to medical school, I wouldn't bother.

they are called electives. school is designed so that you can take classes that are outside of your major. i'd go out on a limb and say its even expected of you. theres no rule that says you can only be interested in one thing and you can't explore any classes outside of that realm.

i'm a kinesiology major, along with all of the sciences i've takin classes in sociology, psychology, history, religious studies, music, etc.

that sounds so much more interesting than "every calss i've ever taken has been about biology" ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 😴
