ill be applying in the next cycle. My gpa is average as of right now so I really want to do good on the MCAT to make up for that. whats the best way to begin preparing?

Try to actually learn something from your prereqs.

Many are the students who start studying for the MCAT and have no memory what a newton or an aromatic ring are.

Cover the basics...all of them.

learn the difference between studying and practicing 🙂 (looking back, I wish I emphasized this more)

I would buy a set of prep books and use it alongside your classes. E.g if your doing acid-base chemistry, do that section of the prep book contemporaneously. I personally recommend EK because it's easy to read and has lots of questions.

Just do well in your classes and wait about 6 months. Actual MCAT study this early will burn you out and will be low yield.

I would enjoy your social life now to prepare for the lack of one you will have while studying.

1. Do well in your classes and really learn the material
2. Read scientific papers and know how to analyze them
3. Read, read, read, read more material! A novel, a news source like the economist - get comfortable with reading dense material.
4. Make sure you're going to have biochemistry done before you take the mcat

UNDERSTAND the material on the mcat. Dont memorize. This is what causes many people to do poorly on the MCAT

This far out, start glancing at MCAT study guides and review courses. Pick whatever method you feel is best for your learning style, can afford, and fits into your schedule. Start purchasing materials if you aren't buying a course package and try not to forget what you learn in pre req classes
