I recently changed career paths and decided that I want to pursue pharmacy school, after obtaining a Bachelor's in Biology from my current school.

Being that this is technically my 3rd/4th year of school, and I am behind, I am scheduled to take Organic Chem I and General Bio II along with a Statistics class next semester.

After all of this talk about how much torture Orgo is, am I setting myself up for failure? I mean I'd like to take these classes at my own pace, but I'm already so behind and I don't want to push things back even more.

I took orgo 1, bio 2, anatomy and physiology, and macro econ last semester. and I felt like it was really managable.

Bio 2 I thought would be a blow off class, but it wasn't. I did have to work but once you read it and comprehend it, it is easy. so it is work but no where near as much as orgo. I thought the labs were a hefty chunk of the work, and I allowed myself about 2-3 nights to study for exams.

Orgo I spent at least 3 nights a week working on hw, never missed a class, and also went to some office hours early on in the semester. It was a lot of work because you have to keep doing mechanisms until you understand them.

So I say go for it, but it does depend on your school and your judgement of your skills.

I also worked about 15 hours a week.

You should probably do it. You won't have a choice about this once you're in pharmacy school. Might as well start now.

If you can't handle those 2 undergrad classes together than you should not go to pharm school.

I took Orgo 1 w/ lab, Bio 2 w/ lab, Human Physiology w/lab and a junior level course!
I also took Orgo 2, Human Anatomy and Physics w/lab.

It was quite hard, but manageable 😀

+1

i did the same as well, and i had a part-time job as a full-time student all throughout undergrad major in biochemistry. it will be tough at first but its all about training and time management.

My gut reply is to just take them together. I too like many here have done course-loads that seemed intense, but in the end still managed. Just manage your time well and prioritize and you will be fine. You are better off getting them done in a fashion similar to how intimidating some of your actual Pharmacy course-loads will feel like.

But on the other end of this, I would also think about your GPA. If your GPA is not so great or you're just holding the line, do whatever you must to protect that. Your better off getting the strong GPA and strong understanding of the fundamentals rather than rushing courses and barely passing and getting a terrible GPA and barely retaining the information.

I made the same change about a year ago. Last summer(10 week courses) I took Gen. Chem. II, Microbiology, and Bio II along with about 20 hours of work each week. It wasn't a whole lot of fun but it's definitely possible. My fall semester was Physics I, Org I, Religion and Honors Anatomy & Physiology I along with work. I haven't started pharmacy school yet but I would imagine the time constraints would be about the same if not more demanding. Oh yeah, grades. I made A's in them.

Agreed.
I'm taking orgo II + lab, bio II + lab, microbial physiology (300 level), and virology (400 level) in addition to working 30 hours / week. Don't believe the hype about organic chemistry. You can easily handle both.

organic chemistry is fun!! im taking orgo 2, anatomy & phys 2, physics 1, (and ballet), and i take additional ballet classes and work part time as a pharm tech! it's hard but as long as you are ok with never seeing any of your friends/family ever again it should be fine 🙂

Dear Jebus, bless this man with a girlfriend

And taking Orgo + Bio at same time should be a vacation compared to Pharmacy school

Statistics is easy. Orgo I isn't as bad as Orgo II. Most of your time will go into Bio II

Honestly, those 2 classes are not hard. Take it easy. i took virology, immunology, bacterial signal transduction, microbial genetics, microbial ecology and still slept 8 hours, and maintained a 3.8 and worked. read a lil everyday dont do crazy crap on the weekend and i am sure you will survive. Luckily if you took AP Bio nothing in BIO II is hard

You can study hard, work hard, and still party hard. Hell, it is undergrad. If you don't live it up now then when will you? Just find your own way to balance study, work, and sleep so that you still get into pharmacy school. But don't forget a social life.

Work hard all week and party hard all weekend. It will help stop you from becoming a shut-in. Plus being anti-social will make you resent school.

Yeah play hard but dont get so messed up that you cant wake up for class the next day. I partied weekday/weekend but in moderation, everything is done in moderation. Whats the point of working hard and playing hard, just work and play. Go play hard on saturday, and sunday and wipe out everything you learned and have an exam at 9 am on monday. Go study hard and fry your brain before the test and fail. Good luck with that! Not doing crazy crap doesn't make you anti-social, when you learn that drinking doesn't mean puking and passing out then you have accomplished something in your life!

the point is dont do anything hard. Do it efficiently! And what is this notion of if you dont live it up now? Trust me you will party harder when your out of college. Its like how you thought you were cool in high school and looking back you were a kid. Whats the point of playing hard now because you want to live it up now, are you dying tomorrow?
