I'm registered for Organic I, Physics I (Alg/Trig Based) and Anatomy for the fall semester and now I'm wondering whether or not this is a good idea. On one hand, I see how taking a social science course in the place of anatomy might be easier, but given that it's only going to get worse from here (Orgo 2 then Biochem, etc) does it even matter? I'm applying next year so I want to prove that I have what it takes, but at the same time don't want to end up biting off more than I can chew and lowering my GPA. HELP!

All of those classes are going to be rough, especially at the same time. Without knowing you and your work ethic/other commitments (e.g. work, extracurriculars) it will be difficult to give you a straight answer yes/no.

Can it be done?- Im sure people have done it and im sure people have completed more difficult semesters as well.

Will it be a pain in the @ss?- Its definitely going to take a lot of hard work.

Just dont spread yourself too thin is my advise from experience. It will turn to bite you in the @ss.

i should probably add that I have 2 kids and a husband at home, however I am committed to working hard to do what it takes..just as long as it's possible within a 24-hr day!

Only you can really answer this question because no one knows your study habits, talents, brains better than you. I personally took Organic 1, Physics 1, Human Structure and Function (a senior level anatomy/physiology class), Marine Biology, and Problem of Universals (philosophy) the same semester. I busted my ass all the time, pulled straight A's...but it was really hard. I have classmates with similar schedules who didn't fair so well...some who did fine. I think you'll get my point.

Also, if you decide to sub out one of your harder classes with an "easier" class just make sure that you aren't setting yourself up for a killer semester later on down the road.

Good luck

I wouldn't do it if it's me. OChem I will eat up more of your time than you ever wanted if you want an A.

What is the course # on the anatomy class? My university had like, lower level anatomy which really wouldn't have been that bad with Orgo/Physics, and higher level courses--which could take up more time than Orgo

If you're dedicated to studying, I think you can pull it off. I took Orgo II, Physics II, Animal Physiology, and all their lab sessions while taking a Kaplan course to study for the MCAT. I managed all A's and pulled off the MCAT. Go for it! :luck:

it depends on the rigors of the courses at your school.

orgo and physics together is no biggie, but at my school anatomy took a lot of time between 3hr labs and 3 lectures a week plus all the memorization.
I wouldn't really do all 3 if you want to have a life, but if you think you can handle it then you know better than we do. Plus whenever an advisor told me I shouldn't/couldn't take a tough schedule it just made me more determined to do it.

Its just a matter of how much time you want to devote. I took Physics I, Orgo I Honors, Genetics, and thier labs and research my first semester of sophomore year and I did fine. You have to just gauge yourself throughout the semester and never let up in your effort. One slip and your grades can plummet. I'm not doing this to scare you, but it is completely possible to pass with flying colors. Best of luck to you. Study HARD!

This really changes the equation altough I am only a pre-med I would like to share my mom's experience when she was in training. She is an ophthalmic surgeon now.

I and my sister were really young when she was a registrar (equivalent of a resident) and she had to take her FRCS exam which is extremely hard she was really stressed out during those months.

And even as a kid I could see the stress transfer over to everyone around her including me and my sister.

You do not want to regret not putting your best foot forward at anytime (Getting into med school is hard enough already). A lot of members have posted suggestions such as 'you can power through it' BUT most of them do not have the responsibility of a family.I personally can because I virtually have to work in a lab and study. I dont have to worry about getting home on time getting chores done or any of that...

I would advise you to take it easy 🙂
