Hey all,

So I am a senior set to graduate this coming May and enrolled in a physical chemistry course as an elective this semester. I took the course purely out of curiosity, i.e. I don't need it for any major or minor, just to be considered a full time student. I have it currently setup as pass/fail since I want to take it just for fun, but can change it to a grade by March 29th.

So my question is, would having it show up as a pass/fail course affect AMCAS calculations or be viewed negatively or questionable?

It would affect AMCAS calculations by not being counted at all.

I couldn't imagine an adcom caring about one P/F class that's not a prerequisite. If you have a bunch of P/F classes on your transcript, they might.

My thoughts only: I'm not an expert or an adcom.

It would be the only pass/fail course on my transcript. I'm also assuming that since I'm a psych major it'll be obvious that it was in no way a required course for me.

Any other opinions or adcoms that can weigh in?

Like medic86 said, it will have no affect your gpa calculations either way. As long as it's not a prerequisite, adcoms won't care either. I did the same thing with a histology course in undergrad.

I don't think it matters, especially if it's the only p/f you have and it's second semester senior year. I did the same thing you're doing but instead of PChem I took an intro music class (I wanted to re-learn how to sight-read music). No one's ever asked me about it and even my schools pre-med committee advisor didn't care when I brought this up way back when. The only question I'd have is why Physical Chem?? That just seems like...well, kind of a lot of work for P/F.

I was just always curious as to the explanation behind thermodynamics since the way it's taught in general chemistry is "here are the rules, just accept it." Since I'm taking it pass/fail the work load isn't really a problem.

Cool! To each their own I guess
