Hi, hope app season is going well for y’all. i am applying gen surg this cycle. My step 1 score is in low 250s, 3 honors (med, surg, and elective), 3 high pass, and 2 passes in 3rd year, mostly honors in preclinical courses, 5 submitted papers/abstracts (No published papers yet), 1 oral presentation, 1 poster presentation, strong letters of recommendation. Im taking CS soon, but wont be taking step 2 CK until late november. I thought this was fine considering that i have decent step 1 score, but at recent meeting with surg chair in my institution said “not taking step 2 done earlier can be red flags.” Other faculties that i have been talking to didnt seem to worry about not taking step 2 earlier.
Do i still have good chance to get interview from top academic programs (top 30-40s)? Is not having step 2 score before interview affect chance of matching to competetive programs?
Anyone who took step 2 late but matched well? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!
