Sorry if this gets confusing... I'm about to register for general chemistry 1+2 at a university 20 minutes from my home. At this university they don't have a calculus requirement like my current university does. So in order for me to take organic chemistry 1 in the Fall at my current university, I would have to take a math course at my local community college (5 minutes away) along with the general chemistry courses.

The real problem is that the math course runs from 11:00 AM-12:40pm (Tuesday+Thursday) and lab for chemistry runs from 1:00 pm - 5:20 pm (Tuesday+Thursday). Would I be able to pull this off lol? Not sure if I would be able to leave class early or something. I remember last summer in CC it was a pretty relaxed environment.

well I don't think anyone can really tell you whether this will work. We don't know what these schools are like or the environments.. maybe the professors won't mind.
But logistically, this seems like a nightmare. what happens on test days? what happens if you hit traffic?
there are no other sections of either of these classes that you could take?

Also, how does the university you're taking gen chem at not have a calc class?

A calculus requirement for which course? Gen chem?

Lol.

Roger that

Yes, unlike UPS I don't love logistics. My only other choice would be to take the chem lab in the morning but this would overlap the math course lol.
Oh my university does have the course but I'm an out-of-state student + broke. 😉. The gen chem sequence here in the summer is about $3000 more

no, not whether they have it at your UG.
But does the school that you're taking gen chem from (which you said is different than your current university) not have a calc class you can take rather than the one at the CC?

I thought you said the calc requirement was for orgo..

You don't NEED to take it this summer. I'm assuming taking it during the year is cheaper?

That's... ridiculous.

It's not like gen chem is p.chem. =/

Right? Haha the funny thing is I have met freshman in gen chem who are taking college algebra but I guess since I'm a transfer I need to be a math major to even touch anything besides biology. The day I graduate will be the happiest day of my life. #swindled

Very true, I don't "need" to, but I'm a senior and already behind (psych major) so I'm just trying to speed things up. Taking it during the regular year really won't make a difference in terms of cost unless I go part-time + commute from somewhere. It's just that I'd be able to take organic chem 1 instead of waiting until next year. I dunno

Oh, I see. You should do it.. Worst case scenario you're a few minutes late to a lab.

Try talking to someone in the department and see if you can get an override to take gen chem without calculus. You do have college algebra, correct?

wait, OP your first post indicated that the reason you're taking gen chem at a different place is because they don't have the calc requirement, no?
"At this university they don't have a calculus requirement like my current university does."

also that you need to take a math course to take orgo -- "So in order for me to take organic chemistry 1 in the Fall at my current university, I would have to take a math course "

so my question still remains -- can you not take the math class at the same place you're taking the gen chem classes? maybe there is something that works better logistically?

Man I tried so many times. Earlier this year one of the dean's threatened me with expulsion because I was trying to "work my around the system" when I tried registering for chemistry a bunch of times and didn't see the e-mails saying I couldn't take it. After that I just gave up trying lmao. It's a really ridiculous school and I'll never understand why things are the way they are.

Think I'm just going to go for it #yolo

That's hilarious. But you do know you probably need Calc for medical school right? Why didn't you just sign up for Calc when you were trying to sign up for Chem?

Actually I never looked into that because I was trying to save as much money as possible. I just checked now and there is a course that runs from 8:30-11:50am which would give me ample time. It would be the difference of $945 vs $300, is it worth it? I'd have to wake up around 8 am as well, though 😉. And the math course is 1 month vs 3 at CC!

Yeah, I just sort of got turned off from chemistry/calc after that incidence because I was scared as hell. I'm back though and regretful of course

Calculus for Gen Chem... that is just insane. Calculus, in general, is the most overrated and unnecessary course for premeds.

[Enter uproar from the SDN Math team]

Honestly, I wouldn't be a competitive applicant at a majority of those schools that require it. So for me, it doesn't matter.
You can interview and get accepted to any medical school that "requires" calculus without having taken it. You would simply have to finish the course before you matriculate into the school.

Take the more expensive class so that you don't have t worry about running around. Getting up early is a small price to pay.

Do you think it's too much material though? Math + chem both 4 weeks long? Compared to the 10 week schedule at CC. Realistically could I get a 4.0 in all the courses in the 4 week plan? If so then I'm down, but if it's a risk I'd prefer to stay safe

Calculus is time consuming with a lot of problem sets, but it can be done. Gen chem just came naturally for me, though labs are time-consuming. What else are you planning to do? Can you just take classes and not work for 4 weeks? Throw yourself into studying and get them done.

I was just planning on shadowing/volunteering a little bit while taking courses and then ramp that up for the last month before summer ends when I'm done with chem. All right then, good to know. Thank you
