What is the latest recommended date for taking the GRE before it is TOO late? For instance, if a school has a October 1st deadline, could you take the GRE by August or Sept without cutting it too close?

Also, can you submit the PTCAS application before you have taken the GRE? I remember reading this somewhere but do not remember if is a "yes" or "no"...

Thanks in advanced

Yes you can submit before your GRE is taken. You can input on the PTCAS application when you plan to take it. I would notify the schools you're applying to as well when to expect it. I would try to take your GRE end of August the absolute latest. If you reaaaallly have to first week in September. Try contacting that particular school to make sure and find out the latest they will take the GRE.

I would personally take it once before your personal deadline of you can. The processing of the GRE for my first exam took about 12 days after I took it. So I'd definitely suggest knowing a time frame for when you would like to have it in. Good luck!

Schools that require the GRE will usually publish the last acceptable date for GRE test scores on there directory pages.

Review PTCAS directory pages for schools that you are interested in for further details.

Hey y'all,

I trotted over here from the pre-med forums to get some answers for a friend of mine.

Does anyone know if the PTCAS is similar to med school with AMCAS/AACOMAS in that there are rolling admissions? I'm assuming it's beneficial to apply early on the cycle and with less chance of acceptance moving toward the deadline. Is that correct? And if someone were to take the GRE on Aug. 13th, how would they be looking very basically for admissions? Would they be applying late for this year's app cycle?

I may have a few questions later, but I'm thankful for any help the PT folks can offer. ^^

Totally depends on the school. Some schools do rolling admissions, some do not. Whether or not applying early is beneficial depends on what schools you are applying for.

Often it is the case that state schools have hard deadlines and do not use rolling admissions, while many of the private schools do use rolling admissions and try to fill their classes earlier (before offers from more attractive state schools come out, no doubt). Don't count on this always being the case, but it was the case for a bunch of the schools I looked at.

Advise your friend to research each school carefully and call the admissions departments for needed clarification. DPT programs seem to be more heterogeneous than med programs as far as what they require and how their admissions process works. Everything to do with admissions timelines, processes and requirements varies widely from school to school, so careful research really is needed. A lot of people waste a lot of money every year applying to schools where they either don't meet the admissions requirements, or don't stand a chance of acceptance.

PTCAS does look and function very similarly to AMCAS though, as far as I have observed. Basically the same software with different colors and fields to fill in.

And August is a bit late for the GRE at some of the more competitive rolling admissions schools, but not too late for programs that have hard deadlines in Nov./Dec.

Hope this helps 🙂

That's very thorough. Thank you. One more question, if you don't mind?

For a public school with an Oct. application deadline, would you predict that an Aug. GRE would be a bit late?

Thank again 😀

Depends if their is any advantage to applying early at that school. Most schools with hard deadlines don't even look at applications until after the deadline has passed, but I would just call the school to confirm. Admissions office people are generally quite helpful. 👍 But GRE scores generally don't take more than a couple weeks to get sent to PTCAS.

The early you take the GRE, the better it will be (if the school is on rolling admissions) depending if you're ready to take it and if you studied enough for it.
