taking the mcat a third time

Hello everyone, I have taken the mcat once already, and I wanted to know if I should either take this aprils mcat (and most likely end up taking the august mcats cuz i might not do too good - only thing is med schools only give you two strikes to take the mcat and taking the august after taking april would be my third time), or should I take the august mcats (given that i will have applied around june/july and taken care of essays and recomm's and have only the scores to send in around mid-october). Does anyone also know if med schools send you secondaries before receiving your scores (cuz handling secondaries takes up a lot of time). Thanks for the help.

I am confused like you about when to take mcat. However I know I got all my secondaries from the schools I applied before they got my MCAT score.Iam sure some body will help you with the rest.
Also you have three chances to take MCAT and not two. Some people have also taken it more than three times.

i just read you only have 3 times to take the mcat. what happens if you take it again? med schools don't look at the scores?

i think by the 3rd time you have to write a reason for taking the MCATs. The idea is that don't plan on taking the MCATs a bunch of times. Just take it when you feel most comfortable.

You take it three times. If you need to take it fourth, you must have it in writing. I believe you need it from the advising office from your college to show that you are interested in attending med school and not taking it for Hyperlearning or Kaplan.

This is the mindset that you should have. Postive thinking means a whole lot when taking a grueling test like the mcat.
Go in thinking that you will get 13's across the board and do well so that you wont have to retake it. If it is your second time, go in thinking that you will have to take the test twice and only twice. The point is- dont go into the test with the mindset that you are going to have to retake it because you are gonna perform poorly.

I agree - think success and perform well. Don't EVER plan on taking that thing more than once.

According to the AAMC website, you can take the MCAT more than three times. You just have to have proof that you are applying to medical school. This can be a copy of your completed AMCAS application, a letter from your advisor or a medical school, or a copy of a rejection letter from the current cycle.

Unfortunately, some schools do look at having to take the MCAT multiple times as a "red flag" in your application, but others only take the most recent MCAT you have taken into consideration.

So as i see it, august mcats arent that bad if you apply early, around june/july. That way you can send in the secondaries, take care of all the recomm.'s and the other stuff that would take time anyway, even if I took the april exam.

Now, about taking them a third time, it sure doesn't look good. So i might take the april or the august, but not both. Thanks everyone.

(In fact, I did go into each test as if it was the last one I'd take. However, medical schools thought differently)
