Hello!

I am thinking of going to Optometry School within 2 years but first I have to take the necessary pre-requisite classes. I come from a background in Economics and Business (BA and MA, 3.9 GPA) completed in Europe and I'm currently working full time in the USA. I plan on taking the pre-requisite classes part time because I cant afford losing my job but I'm worried that taking these classes part time might reflect badly once I apply to Optometry schools in the sense that it might look as though I'm not capable of handling a full course load.

What do you guys think about this? Any thoughts/experiences with that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Generally speaking, they want applicants who have a degree- which you do. They don't specify the need to have a BA or BS; however, most people obtain those degrees prior to applying. With that being said, you just taking the pre-requisites part-time should be okay. Those are generally recommended because they help you prepare for the OAT and the classes you take during opt. school. My advice, call the school(s) you are thinking of applying to and ask them about it. But I think you should be okay. Just call to be 100% sure.

I was in the same situation, working after already having my bachelors degree when I decided to pursue optometry. I'm in my third year of taking the pre-requisites part time (2 courses a semester typically) & I received interview invites from all 4 schools I applied to & have been accepted by 2 schools (withdrew my application from the other 2). So you'll be completely fine! If you're wanting to apply to Waterloo in Canada I think that may be an issue, I believe they require their applicants to be full time throughout their undergrad coursework.
