I'll be graduating in 2011, and I plan on applying in that year as well, so I'll technically have a year "off" while applying for schools. I was hoping to get a job during that time, but I'm not 100% sure what to do. I was considering taking the EMT crash courses and working as an EMT while I'm applying. Any other suggestions for work in that application period? Thanks!

Depends on your degree, I graduated with a BS in Biochemistry. I'm currently a research assistant at a hospital's research institute. Pretty mindless wet lab work but pays well and the people I work with are pretty cool.

I agree with Kramerica, it depends on your degree. I had a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and took 3 years to work as a project engineer. I'll be leaving in to go to PCOM-Philadelphia next year.

I got my EMT-B the summer after I graduated from undergrad and worked as an ER tech for a year. Pays better than private ambulance companies and provides good exposure to emergency medicine.

Thanks guys, I'm a General Biology major right now. I was considering working as a research assistant for a while too.

do something you'll enjoy. you won't get much down time during school. (not that work is downtime, but you'll see what I mean). I was a nursing assistant full time for a year and I don't regret it one bit. I loved the people I worked with and the patients. I'd recommend working with pt's, but do whatever is right for you. Everyone is different. Some people for our Standardized patients were so nervous b/c they never had a patient. Obviously you get over that and everyone has to start somewhere. Good Luck!

Working in a lab is a good idea. Be sure to get a job that allows you some flexibility to take time off when you start getting interviews!
