Recently I have been considering a rural job that has pretty competitive pay, not too stressful workload, and loan forgiveness. I am somewhat used to rural life (place would be <10k pop). Curious what people's own experiences (or prejudices lol) are with taking such opportunities.

The col and area are pluses but raising a family in terms of cultural variety and things to so (love outdoors I mean like zoos, museums, etc) are a little meh.

Curious what others think!

I work in rural. Better pay than jobs closer to cities who will try to take advantage of you. Def better than low paid academic positions. As long as you see good volume of cases, you are fine.

Theres not much to do and not many eating options but the pay makes up for that.

Does that city have flights to bigger places? Is it drivable to bigger cities?
I enjoy the outdoors too and I find as long as I can jump on a flight or take a drive to bigger city to get my "city fix", I am ok not living in a bigger place.

Yeah for me it’s 2 hours to nearest major international airport, which is fine. You can be on your flight to Hawaii in no time.

Depends on what stage in life you are in. If solo or married and just starting, no kids or just a yr or two old, would be fine to work for ~5 yrs, make bank, pay off loans, live-like-a-resident longer and amass a good savings.
With non-toddler kids (ages 5+), I'd want something bigger with more school and lifestyle opportunities.
But like others said, depends on how rural...like, deep backwater sticks? Or 30-60min from civilization?

I grew up in a town of 1500 in BFN midwest. Was GREAT as a kid in the 80s but times change and there's no way I'd do that as a parent (and the 80s were different), unless you're in proximity to a larger city. It's hard to move when your kids are highschool age, and you don't want them growing up in podunk nowhere...all there is to do is drink and get into trouble.

Highschool onwards I was in a town of 75k; great for me then but again, hard to go back to that as a parent . There's just not the opportunities for all sorts of things...sports (aside from the normal American big 3 or 4) you kids might like (tennis, lacrosse, skiing, swimming, etc); food/culture/social aspects of larger city; proximity to airport to GFTO and see some of the world.

Couldn't stand academics working for peanuts, or big city as a LabCorps zombie, would take pay & loan forgiveness in a 10k town over that...at least for a while.

The whole raising kids preteen and up is what makes me hesitate the most. I feel like I can still expose them to the world and other aspects of life, but it would be in concentrated bursts (when on pto go on roadtrips).

Edited to add this would be more backwater.

Rural is generally the best for any physician's finances, but may not be the best for developing the kiddos' worldview. Rural will have its costs, but for many people I think the costs are worth it.

job ad for Anchorage paying 505K base. If I was single and have a green card I'd pack up and go lol.

Would be a nice job. Never been to Alaska but have heard good things if you like that part of the country. Probably has a lot of good seafood (crab legs) and nature.

Cost of living is much higher than the national average due to lack of infrastructure.
