Would any one be apprehensive about discussing sex in a school-specific secondary?

I feel it should be fine, since I am talking about it as it relates to my volunteer HIV testing and prevention job, but I just wanted to be sure. Its part of a story which I need to tell to answer the specific question for the essay--I am not just talking about sex for shock value. And it isn't the entire essay or anything, just like one paragraph.

I was more so unsure if there might be non-physicians on adcoms who might be a tad more shocked to hear someone discuss some of the specifics of HIV prevention.

As long as its not sleezy/graphic, I don't see a problem with it. Especially if it ties in with an important and genuine point or moral.

I dunno, I think its a very, very, very, thin line. Be extra careful and have several people read it for you. I mean, is it generic sex? Or is it like one of your sexual experiences? B/c if its anything specific, I personally would think dont do it. Personally I would try every other possible route, and then if none of those essays were any good, then I would consider including the sex (last resort). But, I dont know the whole situation so I really cant say.

Do you have the paragraph written? If so maybe you can have someone on here read it for you to give you their opinion.

If you are going to be describing something other than vanilla sex, you might find some of the adcom members to be repulsed. Keep in mind that adcom members are men and women, ages ~25 to 80+, and in a wide variety of specialties including clinical medicine, basic sciences and medical humanities and social sciences.

Thanks for the input thus far....

Essentially my particular experience relates to HIV testing and prevention work. One story that I wanted to tell involved a woman whose husband was seeing prostitutes. Basically, condoms were not an option for her, and in my essay I mention "some of the more personal measures that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of HIV transmission during sexual activity"... "things which she could have some control over, like frequency and types of activity." I mention sex a couple more times, but that is about as "graphic" as it gets. Really, this sex talk is just an essential part of the story which I am telling, which itself serves a completely different topic (the general theme of my essay).

I don't really think it will shock anyone, its nothing that wouldn't be said at a lecture on HIV prevention or epidemiology or something. But now that I have posted all this and made a big deal of it in my head, maybe I will just delete this info and risk having a somewhat ambiguous and under-developed story.

Uh, haven't you heard? Sex has nothing to do with the transmission of HIV. It is mostly spread by a conservative, monogamous lifestyle....you know...just by sort of minding your own business.

A year from now when you're working on your REapplication and trying to pinpoint what went wrong the first time around....this would be it.

hey, if its relevant to a bigger theme in your essay, then use it.. just make sure you know what you're talking about .. you dont want ppl to be like "hmmm?" when they read the advice you gave to the patient ..gluck 👍

Sounds good. Don't go too graphic or anything.

But then again, I'm elbow deep in the harm reduction world...

From what you quoted it seems pretty benign, and relevant to the story. I wouldn't worry about including it.

I think what you provided seems clean and fitting to me. Just don't turn it all racy at the end 😱

Come on! We are trying to become specialists of the human body here. If it is tasteful, I say use sex as much as you feel like it. Obviously this person isn't going to make it inappropriate, otherwise he/she wouldn't have asked, right? I completely understand that we all need to be respectful of other people's sensitivities, but sex is very basic human behavior. In fact, I think we all need to be talking sex much more often to combat people (esp. youngins) putting themselves at risk because they aren't sure how/why we have the anatomy and the animalistic behaviors that we do! My two cents.

Lets talk about sex baby...lets talk about you and me.

Now there's two words that doesn't belong in the same sentence. Talking and Sex.

just don't sound like that and you'll be fine.

I think you belong in the "cute girls in med school" thread.😉

Actually yeah I agree. In this country there is a general fear of sex which is instilled in the youth and that's just ridiculous. Sex is a natural part of human life and most other animal life for that matter. There's no reason kids should only mention sex as a whisper under their bread only to begin giggling and nervously looking around. I'm not saying we should just throw open our doors and sex everyone up but we shouldn't make it such a taboo thing to discuss in this country.

that's the only thing I needed to read.

I'm voting for you as president!

I think as long as it is done in a tasteful manner, sex is a fine subject.

Panda, what's a wife to do if her man is steppin' out? (Frnakly, I'd call Jesse Jackson to perform his little flick of the wrist.)

To the OP, I think you are ok with what you've got. I was thinking that you were going more graphic and making reference to men having sex with men. 😳
