Hey all,

I was wondering what MD/PhD programs I should put on my list to apply to.

I am a junior, biochemistry major at a top 20 state university. Here are some of my stats and interests:

GPA: 4.0
MCAT: 36 (11PS, 11V, 14BS)
Research experience: 2 years of experience, (1.5 years with independent project) in a microbial genetics lab. I have a Howard Hughes Fellowship (awarded through my school) to fund my research.
Clinical: ~50 hours of shadowing
Volunteering, extracurriculars: standard volunteering and community service (literacy programs and working with mentally challenged children through physical activity) and am involved with a group on campus involved with raising awareness about public health issues. Was a Undergraduate TA for principles of genetics this semester.

Interests: bacteriology, immunology, oncology.

Thanks!

I see no problem with getting into MD/Ph.D. As long as you "wow" the Ph.D committee, then you get into the program. That's a very little known fact. If the MD committee rejects you but the Ph.D accepts you, you're in the MD/Ph.D program. If MD accepts you and Ph.D rejects you, you're in MD-only.

These two threads are a wealth of resources for MD/PhD. Read them

Overall, your numbers are solid. But your EC's are questionable. It is an MD/PhD and you need to make sure you are committed to the medical aspect of this as well.

If you are applying as is, I would suggest mid-high tier schools.

Wrong. OP may be able to get in higher-tier, research-heavy schools--like HST, for example--that emphasize the kind of portfolio OP offers. 🙂

I'd have to agree that chances for top schools is open. The OP should realize, however, that what's important is doing an MSTP program, not necessarily the name of the school.
