So this might be a stupid question, but one of my biggest hobbies is target shooting. I am at the range at least once or twice a month. I do both long distance (300+ yards) and pistol shooting. It takes a lot of concentration, precision, consistency, and attention to minute details. Is this something that should be included for manual dexterity?!

Also... there is no place for liberal gun control s**t in my thread!! Thanks!! 😀

I don't think target shooting counts as manual dexterity. It seems to me that involves precise vision and steady muscle control with your arms shoulders and your chest. Don't think it has much to do with hands except for a fact that your holding the gun and pulling the trigger

actually now that I think about it shooting does involve manual dexterity. On a scale from 1 through 10, 1 being no dexterity 10 being lots of dexterity, I say about 3. Where as for sculpting plaster being a 10

No offense, but you really don't know much about shooting technique. I'm listing pistol shooting on my manual dexterity.

Maybe you are right... but i feel that the bold above is a huge part of manual dexterity, not just what your hands do. It just has been a huge part of my life growing up, so i feel it is worthwhile to mention it somewhere. Also i feel it could be a good conversation piece in an interview.

no you should DEFINITELy mention it. Like on ur extra curricular activity portion and you should list it under manual dexterity too. I'm jus sayin it's not the typical activity you would think for manual dex

I imagine that as long as you can defend it, and it sounds like you can, you can put whatever you want in your app.

Btw, you're a redneck 😛

Absolutely. I did.

Those of you who don't think so have never done it before.

As a 3 time state jr olympic medal winner, I can distinguish minute differences in torque, move my fingers independently, and hold my right arm rock solid. Not to mention timing my shot in between heartbeats.

Try this: relax your hand, and try to curl your index finger and touch your palm without moving your other fingers. This is an essential skill in pistol shooting.

While using pipette for gel electrophoresis, I had to do it for a bunch of students in my class because they weren't steady enough.

Hombre, I hope we go to the same school, it would be nice to have some competition!

 Wait, why do you have to be able to touch the palm? You don't need to pull triggers back that much, do you?

Pistol shooting definitely is a manual dexterity skill!

Thanks!! To be honest you probably would be too, unfortunately it's illegal in California to own about 75% of the guns that are out there. Come visit me in AZ and you will see how fun it is to be a redneck!

I was just showing how your hand naturally squeezes as you move your index finger, and it's easier to see if you exaggerate it.

Gun's don't mean redneck, Being asian i'm far from it!

For sure put it down. I was the 2005 nevada state trap shooting champ and I definately put that down. Shooting of any kind takes a ton of manual dexterity/hand-eye coordination.

I am the national cow-chip tossing champion.... Can I count that as manual dexterity too??

I'm also VERY accurate at flinging rubber bands at people.. what can i say, i have the touch.

Put it in!!! and take pride in it!!!

In the military it is common knowledge, among the medial units, that the dentist is typically the best pistol shot of all the officers.

If you have any old military guys looking over your paper work they will take note of your skills.

Of course not. I was responding more to the "liberal s***t" comment. That said, I wasn't aware that being a redneck was a racial thing... more of a upbringing thing, no? I could be wrong though..

Never thought about this before... Thanks for your input everyone. I am def going to be putting it in, its also good to know that there are other shooters out there going the DMD route!!! 😀

I will excuse your comment, because it is very apparent that you are ignorant about the sport. You probably have never even handled a hand gun, let alone shot one. Go put 5 shots in the size of a nickel at just 10 feet away and then come back and talk...

I can put 5 inside a dime from 20 feet away. I'm better than you.😀

I'd go for it

Absolutely... in fact for the past several years i have been working my way up to a rocket launcher, just so i could put it in my dental app!! 😀

Heck, it sounds like you should be honing your manual dexterity using the 122mm howitzer and skip the rocket launcher.

Didn't you hear the guy? He can put 5 bullets straight in a hairpin at 500 yards. He can hit 23 illegal immigrants using one bullet. What does he need a howitzer for?

I need the howitzer so i can improve to 10 hairpin bullets at 1000 yards!!!

Also the illegal immigrant thing was way over the top and uncalled for... 😱

its hand-eye coordination. I actually do alot of shooting myself (200-300 yard) and pistol (20-25 yards)

Actually for those of you who have never fired a high-powered rifle at long range, it is a VERY hard skill to master. You have to squeeze the trigger VERY SLOWLY and very calmly, cause if you jerk it fast, ur going to shift your rifle by.... maybe like a 1/2 a millimeter and thats gonna throw off your bullet from your 300+ target by inches..... and there is the flinch-control, many people are a little afraid of the heavy recoil that follows, so their body flinches by a few millimeters right before the BOOM.

Yes... It was absolutely in poor taste. Kind of like the liberal comment, actually. I thought that if you were going to use my being from California as ammo, so to speak, I could use your being an Arizonan.

Anyhoo, relax, friend. It was just a pretty bad joke. No harm intended.

No harm done. 😀

Sorry, in no way was i trying to make this a political battle. I should not have made the liberal comment in the beginning, my apologies if i offended you in anyway.

But seriously... if you ever want to learn how to shoot hit me up with a pm. 🙂 Cheers!

Yeah. Knowing how to squeeze a trigger should come in handy in dentistry when the procedures we perform will be robotic and all we will be required to do is pull a trigger.
