Questions:

1. With respect to tax deductions: Can you deduct your residency travel/interview expenses?

2. With respect to loan consolidation: Is there any difference between consolidation with the federal government vs. with a private company (ie College Loan Corporation)? As far as I can see, interest rates, deference, etc are the same. Am I missing something?

No, you cannot deduct the costs of looking for a new job, only for a preexisting career. Sorry.
